My family went to Chili's. The prices felt reasonable and the teens loved it, but I still don't think I get the hype.

My family had dinner at Chili's on a Friday night. It felt like the hottest spot in town and I was pleased with some of the food β€” but I still don't think I get the hype.

Terri Peters

  • My husband, my teenage son, and his girlfriend visited Chili's on a Friday night for dinner.
  • Our teenage dining companions love Chili's and our food wasn't bad, but I'm not sure I get the hype.
  • The $100 meal seemed reasonably priced, but Chili's definitely isn't my favorite chain restaurant.

On one of my teenage son's first dates with his girlfriend, they went to Chili's.

As a food writer, I was curious about the choice. I wouldn't classify the major chain as an ideal date-night destination, but it's clear they may have been inspired by TikTok.

Chili's is a hit with Gen Z on the social-media platform, which is brimming with videos of people around their age eating mozzarella sticks with impressive cheese pulls and burgers loaded with toppings.

A few months later, it was my son's requested birthday dinner, so my husband and I accompanied him and his girlfriend to our local Chili's on a Friday night.

The place was hopping, with a 30-minute wait for a table and loud groups of diners sipping colorful, fish-bowl-sized margaritas as they waited for their meals.

It felt like the hottest spot in town, but I found the food underwhelming. Always willing to give a restaurant a second chance, our same group returned to that Chili's on another Friday night a few weeks later.

Here's what I thought of my second try at understanding Chili's popularity with younger customers.

Although Chili's was once again crowded, we didn't have to wait for a table.
Table with menus at Chili's

Terri Peters

Unsurprisingly, Chili's was just as crowded around 6 p.m. on a Friday as it was the last time we visited. This time, though, there was no wait to be seated.

Within seconds of walking in the doors, we were at a table looking over the Chili's menu.

The Chili's menu really covers all the bases.
Chili's menu in hand

Terri Peters

Truly, I find the menu at Chili's a little all over the place, with a variety of cuisines and options that almost feels overwhelming.

Things I'd expect to be on a neighborhood-grill-style menu are there, like burgers and chicken tenders, but there's also seafood, salads, quesadillas, steaks, and pasta dishes.

The drink menu feels pretty extensive with lots of colorful cocktails, themed margaritas, and beers.

Still, although it seems to me that Chili's is trying a little too hard to be everything to everyone, the crowd size during our visit indicates the chain's doing something right.

We started with a free appetizer that I earned through Chili's rewards program.
Chips and salsa in basket at Chili's

Terri Peters

We're signed up for the Chili's My Rewards loyalty program, which costs nothing to join and includes perks like a free birthday dessert and special savings offers throughout the year.

My Rewards member can choose between a free non-alcoholic beverage or free chips and salsa at each visit. We chose the latter

The appetizer at Chili's is usually around $7, so it's a nice freebie to split across the table while waiting for entrees. It wasn't bad or super memorable.

While we snacked on our chips and salsa, we ordered a round of drinks β€” sodas ($3 each) for my son, his girlfriend, and I, and an $8 beer for my husband.

After we ordered, I spent some time observing the crowded restaurant.
Crowds of people inside a Chili's

Terri Peters

The restaurant was only getting busier by the time we'd ordered our meals.

I was surprised by the mix of clientele, from young women in their 20s who were dressed for a Friday night out to families with little kids to elderly patrons dining together in groups.

On a trip to the bathroom, I spotted lots of brightly-colored, giant-sized margaritas, too β€” a true sign you've landed at a Chili's.

My son ordered what seems to be Chili's most TikTok-ed dish.
Chili's triple dipper in basket

Terri Peters

TikTok loves the Chili's Triple Dipper. The dish has thousands of posts with millions of views on the platform, and people seem to love ordering it for its customizability.

It's meant to be an appetizer, but it contains enough food for a person to order as their meal. It consists of a pick-your-own selection of any three appetizers from the menu.

Earlier that day, my son was already anticipating his Triple Dipper, telling my husband he was "so hyped" to order one that night.

His choice of appetizers in the $18 platter? Big Mouth Bites cheeseburger sliders, fried mozzarella, and fries.

Although he loved everything in his Triple Dipper, he said he'd skip the fries next time since they cost less and aren't as filling as other appetizer options.

To get the most value for his money and add protein to the meal, he'd keep the sliders and mozzarella sticks but add chicken tenders as his third item.

Chili's has really, really good chicken tenders.
Chicken tenders with sides of fries and mac and cheese at Chili's

Terri Peters

My son's girlfriend chose a $15 platter with four Chicken Crisper chicken tenders, fries, and white-cheddar macaroni and cheese.

She enjoyed the meal, and since that's exactly what I ordered the last time I visited Chili's, I knew how delicious it was firsthand.

I'll give Chili's this: The chain serves really well-battered, crispy chicken tenders β€” probably some of my favorites from a chain restaurant.

Diners can also customize their tenders by having them tossed in sauces like honey chipotle or Nashville hot.

There are an impressive amount of options for dipping sauces to pair with them, too, from standards like honey mustard and ranch to unique-to-Chili's dips like Sweet Chili Zing and Buffalo Ranch.

My husband and I shared the most expensive item on the menu.
Fajita platter with steak, shrimp, chicken at Chili's

Terri Peters

Out of curiosity β€” and because we're focusing on a low-gluten, high-protein diet β€” my husband and I ordered the most expensive dish on the Chili's menu to share.

Chili's Fajitas For Two comes with four meat portions (we chose two portions of steak, and one each of chicken and shrimp), rice, black beans, tortillas, and fixings like sour cream, cheese, and pico de gallo.

The $40 entree came out hot and sizzling, and the fajita meats and grilled bell peppers and onions were delicious. The roasted jalapeΓ±o on top was flavorful and spicy, a nice contrast to the cool sour cream and shredded cheese.

Overall, we liked our meal, but I'd feel better about spending my money on fajitas at one of the mom-and-pop Mexican restaurants in our town rather than a chain restaurant.

Our $100 meal felt reasonably priced, but I still don't get the Chili's hype.
Author Terri Peters smiling outside of a Chili's

Terri Peters

Our meal, which cost just under $100 before tip, felt reasonably priced.

However, there are plenty of other spots (including other chains) where I'd prefer to spend the same amount on dinner for a Friday night out.

Both times I've eaten at Chili's, I felt the food was tasty enough, but not super memorable (aside from those yummy chicken tenders, of course).

I wish I could say I fully understand the Chili's hype, but it's still just not my favorite chain restaurant.

Still, Chili's is popular with teenagers these days, and I love getting to share a meal with my son and his girlfriend and just talk.

As parents of two teens, my husband and I are always trying to find little ways to understand what they enjoy, so if hitting a crowded Chili's on a Friday night and bonding over Triple Dippers and sizzling fajitas is what they want to do, we're only too happy to oblige.

How Wall Street unwinds: The 7 Hamptons hot spots to know this summer

Hamptons beach house

Miles Astray/Getty Images

  • The Hamptons have long been a popular summer destination for bankers and traders.
  • We spoke to Wall Street insiders and others about the top hot spots for summer 2025.
  • Here are the 7 places they said you'll find finance industry insiders this summer.

Whether by car, helicopter, the LIRR, or the infamous Jitney bus, if it's a Friday afternoon between Memorial and Labor Day, Wall Street is going "out east."

The Hamptons have been a haven for the ultrawealthy since the Astors and Vanderbilts set up estates there more than a century ago, but the transition from fishing and whaling towns to playground for urban professionals really started to take off in the freewheeling 1980s, during Wall Street's boom years.

Since then, the secret has been out, and over the last decade, social media and Bravo's "Summer House" have introduced a whole new generation to these once-sleepy seaside towns of Long Island.

Walker Ward, who previously sold data and research to hedge funds and other large investors, told Business Insider that the Hamptons remain a recreation hub for stressed-out Wall Streeters looking to escape the heat and humidity of the city.

"There's so much to do there," Ward said, who has summered there for the better part of the last decade. "Why wouldn't you want to go out there if you could afford it?"

Whether you're looking to relax or rage, there's something for everyone β€” as long as you have deep pockets. And, as with any destination for the wealthy, these resort towns offer ample opportunity to peacock.

"The Hamptons, especially with social media, have become a runway show for people to go out and flaunt what they have, how much money they make, and what kind of car they're driving," said Ward, who now parodies Wall Street on social media as WalkSauce42.

In preparation for the July 4 holiday, we spoke to current and former financial industry professionals, as well as some Hamptons locals and business proprietors, about this year's hottest hangouts. Some of the industry insiders we spoke to asked to remain anonymous to protect their jobs because speaking to the press is either forbidden or frowned upon.

Here are 7 top Hamptons hangouts for bankers, traders, and more.

Surf Lodge

This was the most-mentioned spot, which is why we're putting it first. It's a quaint seaside hotel and restaurant, as well as a sceney place to get bottle service on the beach and hear live music and top DJs in Montauk. But FYI, tickets for entry on July 4th are pretty much sold out. A table on the beach for 10 for the next day is listed as $7,500.

A nearly $100 chicken tender tower went viral a few summers ago, thanks in part to TikTok and Instagram posts by Ward.

"The tendie towers baby, that's the intern's favorite, and the holy grail," Ward joked to BI. "Everyone knows Surf Lodge."

Someone who previously worked at a large investment bank confirmed it's popular with the Wall Street crowd.

"It's got a DJ, a deck. You pay thousands for a table," he said.

The Sag Harbor outpost of this Upper East Side French restaurant opened in 2017, and has since built a reputation for being "one of the satellite offices for the elite," said Ward, who currently summers in Amagansett, between East Hampton and Montauk.

The restaurant bans shorts and flip-flops and is perched alongside a marina deep enough to allow large yachts to dock.

"Everyone loves to sit there and drink wine and look at the sterns of all these massive yachts," Ward said.

The Wall Street recruiter described it as "another see and be seen spot."

The menu offers a seafood tower complete with a dozen oysters, king crab, langoustine, shrimp, a half lobster, snow crab and shrimp for $250, a 100-gram tin of Caviar Ossetra Imperial for $490, and their signature Le Poulet Cajun, a $39 Cajun-spice-rubbed chicken with a beurre-blanc sauce, salad, and fries.

Stephen Talkhouse, founded in 1987, is also known for its live music scene. It's become so popular with vacationers that one Hamptons local complained to BI of summer lines that "wrapped around the village." Ward agreed, saying you have to know the staff in order to "Trojan Horse" your way in.

Located in Amagansett, between Montauk and East Hampton, its website describes it as "a legendary music scene and casual neighborhood bar in one. The music calendar for the July Fourth weekend includes "Secret Sellebrity Society Band" and alt-rockers "Kids That Fly."

The Palm Beach outpost of Mary Lou's is well attended by local financiers and the socially or politically connected. It's also attracted popular musical acts from The Chainsmokers to Mojave Grey.

Mary Lou's Montauk branch, which opened earlier this year, is aiming to provide the same ambiance and flair. Cofounder Alex Melilla told BI that the crowd so far has been "a more mature crowd, affluent crowd, influencers, tastemakers, as well as a great local scene." The

The Wall Street set may be especially drawn to the special menu set to be curated by the team behind Marea, the luxurious seafood restaurant just a stone's throw from Deutsche Bank Center in midtown, which Mary Lou's will offer during a weekend later this month.

Duryea's is a seafood restaurant on the water in Montauk known for its $97 lobster cobb salad.

Duryea's was purchased by Apollo CEO Marc Rowan in 2014, and it quickly turned from a classic lobster shack into one of the sceniest restaurants on the East Coast. Hampton's legend and Food Network star Ina Garten has said it is one of her favorite restaurants.

"In my 20's that was the only place we would go on summer weekends there because it was cheap and easy," one Wall Street recruiter said. Not anymore. "People go to Duryea's on their yachts and tender to shore."

Wall Streeters looking to decompress might turn to Gurney's Resort & Seawater Spa, a 146-room hotel and spa with multiple al fresco dining options along a lush stretch of beach in Montauk.

The Wall Street headhunter said it remains one of the most popular outposts for the financial crowd β€” and Lizabeth Zindel, the editor-in-chief of Hamptons Social Magazine, explained why: "It's absolutely beautiful," Zindel told BI. "There's a huge terrace as well, which overlooks the ocean from up above."

On the menu at the outdoor Firepit lounge are creative cocktail concoctions like the Chocolate Negroni; the "Afternoon Tea" featuring Earl Grey, bergamot, gin, and cream; and the "Improved Grasshopper" featuring mint and chocolate liqueurs. Each is $23.

The country clubs

As with any wealthy enclave, the Hamptons boasts numerous country clubs.

The Hampton's local described Southampton's Shinnecock, which is hosting next year's US Open, as the "fanciest golf place out here." Ward cited East Hampton's Maidstone Club as another place where "fancy people" from the Street spend their time "hobnobbing."

"Maidstone is the Arnie poster above the bed," he said, referring to a poster of Arnold Schwarzenegger as a pro bodybuilder above an aspiring muscleman's bed. "It's what you aspire to be."

I visited Olive Garden for the first time in nearly 20 years. The meal wasn't perfect, but I can't wait to go back.

20 June 2025 at 16:38
Four different pasta dishes, two different soups, a large bowl of salad, and a half-eaten breadstick on a table at Olive Garden.
I ate at Olive Garden for the first time in over 20 years.

Steven John

  • I visited an Olive Garden location for the first time in almost 20 years.
  • I ordered four of the "create your own pasta" dishes, which came with soup or salad and breadsticks.
  • Some of the meals were better than others, but overall, I was impressed by the dining experience.

When I go to a chain restaurant, I know I can typically expect reasonable prices, decent food, a few crying babies, and a completely full stomach by the time I leave.

On a recent trip to Olive Garden, my son and I experienced all of that and more.

I hadn't been to the Darden-owned chain in nearly 20 years, so I was excited to see how the experience would stack up against other restaurant chains I've been to recently.

Here's how the meal went.

The chain is known for serving classic Italian-American fare.
The exterior of an Olive Garden
Olive Garden (location I visited not pictured) has nearly 900 locations around the world.

Jonathan Weiss/Shutterstock

The Italian-American restaurant chain opened its first location in Orlando in 1982. It's owned by Darden β€” the same company that owns brands like Longhorn Steakhouse, Ruth's Chris, and Yard House.

Today, there are nearly 900 Olive Garden restaurants around the world. However, my son and I visited a busy location in Long Island, New York.

We started with the chain's unlimited soup, salad, and breadsticks.
A large bowl of salad, two different soups, and several plates on a table at Olive Garden.
Each meal came with either a soup or salad, and breadsticks.

Steven John

Since I hadn't been to an Olive Garden location in nearly 20 years, my son and I decided to order four different "create your own" pasta dishes to get a feel for the chain's offerings.

Each meal came with the chain's signature "never-ending" soup or salad and breadsticks. To try a bit of everything, we asked for two servings of salad and two soups β€”Β pasta e fagioli and chicken and gnocchi.

I wouldn't call the Olive Garden breadsticks memorable, but they were definitely bountiful.

We were able to have as many as we wanted, which would have been great if we didn't have so much food coming.

Although we enjoyed the bread, I found other parts of the first course to be more memorable. The salad was a bit overdressed and heavy on lettuce, but the croutons were tasty.

I was impressed by the soups.
Four different pasta dishes, two different soups, a large bowl of salad, and a half-eaten breadstick on a table at Olive Garden.
The pasta e fagioli soup was my favorite.

Steven John

Both soups, however, were better than I expected them to be. The chicken and gnocchi soup was rich, creamy, and loaded with an excellent balance of meat, gnocchi, and spinach.

I also thought the pasta e fagioli was savory and balanced without being overly salty.

After sampling each, my son and I agreed that the latter was the better of the two.

When our meals came, I wasn't a fan of the pasta with marinara sauce.
Rigatoni topped with marinara sauce and Parmesan cheese.
I thought the marinara sauce tasted like it came from a can.

Steven John

I make a decent homemade marinara sauce from scratch using a can of tomato sauce, chopped onions and garlic, salt, sugar, and a basic blend of herbs. The process, not counting the slow simmer, takes less than 10 minutes and is anything but a challenge.

So, getting a dull marinara sauce from an Italian-themed restaurant was disappointing.

I thought the marinara ($14) tasted like it was poured right from a can, without any additional handiwork by a chef. It was salty and tasted like β€” well, tomato sauce.

The addition of freshly-grated Parmesan, black pepper, and red-pepper flakes helped some, but frankly, I'd choose my own marinara sauce any day of the week.

I didn't love the meat sauce, either.
Rigatoni topped with a red meat sauce and Parmesan cheese.
The meat sauce included ground beef and Italian sausage.

Steven John

Olive Garden's meat sauce ($14) tasted just like the marinara, but included ground beef and Italian sausage.

The sauce was a bit too thin for my linking (it wasn't watery, but it wasn't thick, either) and the beef was a bit on the tough side. Without the tomato sauce, I'm willing to bet the meat would have been quite dry.

Unless the chain changed up its marinara recipe, I likely wouldn't order either of these dishes again.

However, I was pleasantly surprised by the creamy mushroom sauce.
A bowl of rigatoni in a cream sauce with mushrooms.
My son loved the rigatoni with a creamy mushroom sauce.

Steven John

I typically detest mushrooms, but in the name of honest journalism, I ate several of the noodles that came in the creamy mushroom sauce ($14).

I was pleasantly surprised at how good the taste was, even though I didn't eat any of the sliced mushrooms in the bowl.

My son did, however, and said the dish was superb. My tasting of the noodles revealed a rich, creamy, flavor you'd expect from a classic Alfredo sauce, and I can see how anyone who enjoys mushrooms would've found the dish a pleasure.

We loved the five-cheese ziti al forno.
A bowl of ziti in pink sauce with melted cheese on top.
The five-cheese ziti al forno was our favorite dish.

Steven John

The five-cheese ziti al forno was more expensive than the other "create your own" pastas we ordered, but it was well worth the $19.30 price tag.

It was heavy on cheese but didn't feel overwhelming. Overall, the dish had a flavor that reminded me of vodka sauce, and I loved the fact that it was baked. The fresh parsley sprinkled atop the pasta also added a nice herbal profile.

Of the four meals we tried, we took home the least leftovers from this one.

Overall, I enjoyed my meal at Olive Garden
Four different pasta dishes, two different soups, a large bowl of salad, and a half-eaten breadstick on a table at Olive Garden.
I'd definitely visit Olive Garden again.

Steven John

If you go to an Olive Garden expecting a Michelin-starred experience, you'll leave disappointed.

However, if you come expecting food that will be filling, satisfying, and priced fairly, I'll wager that more times than not, you'll be happy with your meal.

I never had a strong opinion about Olive Garden, but after visiting for the first time in almost 20 years, I'd definitely consider it on my list of places to return to.

Tariffs on China are taking a bite out of Cracker Barrel's gift shop business

5 June 2025 at 19:29

Some of Cracker Barrel's gift shop inventory is getting hit by tariffs.

Alex Bitter/BI

  • Cracker Barrel is the latest company to report a hit from tariffs.
  • The restaurant chain expects tariffs to dent earnings from its gift shop business later this year.
  • Cracker Barrel is rethinking its gift store selection as part of a broader revamp of its business.

President Donald Trump's tariffs have part of Cracker Barrel's business over a barrel.

Cracker Barrel diners usually walk through the shop, which sells everything from rocking chairs to skillets featuring Dolly Parton's likeness, on their way into and out of Cracker Barrel's restaurants. The restaurant chain sources roughly one-third of those products from China, CEO Julie Masino said during an earnings call on Thursday.

The number is higher when counting China-made products that Cracker Barrel buys from US-based suppliers, the CEO said. She did not say what share of the stock those items account for.

As a result of tariffs, Cracker Barrel expects a $5 million hit to its EBITDA β€” a measure of profitability β€” next quarter, CFO Craig Pommells said. The chain expects EBITDA for its 2025 fiscal year of between $215 million and $225 million.

Cracker Barrel's retail sales made up about 20% of its revenue last year, according to the company. The majority of revenue came from its restaurants.

Like many retailers, Cracker Barrel has worked to limit the cost of tariffs by negotiating with its suppliers, finding new sources of products, and rethinking its prices, Masino said.

"The teams have been thinking about tariffs for months," she said on the call.

At the same time, Cracker Barrel has been planning changes to its gift shops as part of its broader business strategy, Masino said.

Last year, after Cracker Barrel reported a net loss and lower foot traffic, Masino said the chain's restaurants were "not as relevant as we once were." Cracker Barrel has started a three-year plan to turn around results, including new restaurant formats and menu items.

On Thursday, Masino said that Cracker Barrel was reevaluating the product selection at its gift shops as part of that turnaround plan. The company is also reconsidering when it brings in seasonal items, such as Halloween and Christmas decorations, she said.

"There have been a couple of key things that the tariff situation has actually enabled us to accelerate," Masino said.

I ate at Braum's, a beloved Southern fast-food chain. Its chicken strips were as good as Chick-fil-A's.

28 May 2025 at 16:50
A Braum's icecream store sign.
Braum's is an ice cream shop that only opens locations within 300 miles of its processing plant. It also sells fast food and grocery items.

Business Insider/ Alcynna Lloyd

  • I visited Braum's, a southern fast-food chain that only has locations in five states.
  • I bought almost every item on the menu, including burgers, fries, chicken strips, and ice cream.
  • The burgers and chicken strips were great, but I still think ice cream is the best thing to order.

The West Coast has In-N-Out. The Midwest has Dairy Queen. I'd argue the South has Braum's Ice Cream and Dairy Store.

In 1933, Henry Braum started a small butter plant in Emporia, Kansas, which expanded to include milk and ice cream production. In 1968, Henry's son Bill opened the first official Braum's store in Oklahoma City.

Today, the family-run business has more than 300 locations across Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. According to the company, every store is located within a 300-mile radius of its processing plant in Tuttle, Oklahoma.

Braum's is best known for its wide range of ice cream and frozen yogurt, from classic flavors like vanilla to stranger concoctions like pineapple upside-down cake. But it's more than an ice cream shop β€” it also has staples of the American diet like cheeseburgers, chicken strips, shakes, and malts.

One of Braum's locations sits about two miles from my childhood home in Fort Worth, Texas. When I was a kid, on Fridays after a long day of work, my dad would bring home a tub of ice cream. If I were really lucky, we'd go to the store. Together, we'd sit, ice-cream cone in hand, in silence, savoring the flavors.

I wanted to see if Braum's still served up old-school charm and yummy food, so my husband and I took a trip to the closest one near us in Dallas. Here are some items I tried from the menu β€” some I'd order again, and others I'd probably skip.

Even though it's a chain, Braum's gives off the vibe of a mom-and-pop shop.

This Braum's is located in Dallas.

Business Insider/ Alcynna Lloyd

Unlike fast food giants like McDonald's and Burger King, which have embraced modernity in both their branding and menu presentation, Braum's has done the opposite. It has retained its cozy, classic vibe, making it feel both familiar and comforting.

Maybe that's what makes it special.

When I visited the store, I spent a lot of time reminiscing about the times my dad and I shared there. It all felt so nostalgic.

It's a convenient place to grab a snack.

Braum's has a small selection of produce and snacks.

Business Insider/ Alcynna Lloyd

Braum's has dozens of ice cream flavors to choose from. But it is also a grocery store with a small market. Customers can buy everyday items like bananas, tomatoes, onions, and even hamburger buns if they'd rather grill their own at home.

Braum's ice cream is pretty affordable.
An overview of Braum's ice cream selection and it's sugar cones, and syrup.
Most of Braum's ice cream tubs are priced under $5.

Business Insider/ Alcynna Lloyd

Braum's sells its ice cream in various sizes, but most tubs contain three pints. Each tub is typically priced under $5 β€” a steal compared to other brands.

A single pint of Blue Bell ice cream is sold for $3.97 (excluding tax) at Walmart, and a single pint of Ben & Jerry's ice cream at Target is $4.99, according to both companies' websites.

Braum's has more than 100 ice cream flavors.
Several buckets of ice cream that are different flavors like bubble gum, chocolate Pecan, and fried carmel toffee pie.
Some of Braum's quirkier gourmet ice cream.

Business Insider/ Alcynna Lloyd

The company sells traditional flavors like vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate, but it also has quirky options like bubble gum and Mother's Circus animal cookies.

I wouldn't recommend the latter β€” it was too sweet for my taste buds, and didn't have enough animal crackers.

Braum's also sells frozen yogurt.
Buckets of Braum's frozen yogurt, including flavors like pineapple upside down cake, coconut chocolate walnut, and banana pecan.
Braum's also has a robust selection of frozen yogurt.

Business Insider/ Alcynna Lloyd

Ice cream is typically made with dairy from cream, whereas frozen yogurt is made from cultured milk. On most days, I'd choose frozen yogurt β€” which might be a controversial opinion.

While I haven't tried all of Braum's frozen yogurt flavors, their vanilla cone always hits the spot. I doubt I'll ever get around to trying the pineapple upside-down cake flavor, though.

Braum's makes several flavors of sugar-free ice cream.

Business Insider/ Alcynna Lloyd

Sugar-free ice cream isn't really my cup of tea, but I understand why some people prefer it or choose it for dietary or medical reasons.

If that's you, then you're in luck β€” Braum's offers many sugar-free flavors.

I have to admit the vanilla chunk chocolate tub looked pretty tempting.

My husband and I ordered a lot of food.
A Braum's tray filled with food like hamburgers, fries, tenders and a malt.
This entire meal cost me about $36.58.

Business Insider/ Alcynna Lloyd

To get the full Braum's experience beyond ice cream, we ordered about 10 different items from the menu:

  • A double quarter pound sweet 'n spicy Gouda burger combo meal with medium fries and a large sweet tea β€” $8.89
  • A cheeseburger combo meal with medium fries and a large strawberry shake β€” $8.29
  • Four-piece chicken strips β€” $5.19
  • A grilled chicken sandwich β€” $4.79
  • Medium chili cheese fries β€” $4.64
  • A medium strawberry malt shake β€” $1.99

The chicken strips were better than I expected.

I was surprised by how good Braum's chicken strips were.

Business Insider/ Alcynna Lloyd

In theΒ chicken strips war, restaurants like Chick-fil-A and Zaxby's usually reign supreme. But I'm throwing Braum's into the fight.

Braum's strips were crispy on the outside, yet still soft inside. I also appreciated that they weren't overly salty β€” just the right amount. For me, they rivaled Chick-fil-A's.

I really wanted to like the chili fries.

I was probably most excited to try the chili fries. Crispy potatoes dressed in perfectly melted cheese and sauceβ€” what more could anyone ask for?

Well, in my case, a bit more seasoning. Ultimately, they tasted bland, and it felt more like I was eating canned beans on fries than actual chili.

Braum's burgers are simple and delicious.

While I thought the Gouda burger was good β€” and a bit spicy β€” it didn't quite compare to Braum's traditional cheeseburger.

It wasn't fancy β€” just meat, buns, lettuce, tomato, and cheese β€” but it felt classic, exactly what I imagine when I think of a good burger.

The grilled chicken sandwich was all right. It didn't quite compare to a sandwich I'd get at Chick-fil-A, but I had no trouble finishing it. For $4.79, I'd say it's worth the price.

Dessert was my favorite part of the meal.

After dinner, my husband and I went back to the counter to order ice cream.

He bought a double scoop sopapilla cheesecake sundae for $3.79, and I got a small chocolate and vanilla frozen yogurt cone for $1.45.

His sundae tasted like the real deal. The cinnamon-flavored ice cream sat on top of a spongy cake, draped in golden caramel. I think it's perfect for someone with a sweet tooth.

However, the frozen yogurt cone was right up my alley. It was simple and sweet, and the flavors weren't too overpowering.

We bought so much food that we had to take it home.

I left the restaurant full, but not without taking a to-go bag. The next day, my husband and I devoured our leftovers for lunch.

I'll be visiting again soon.

While the burgers and sandwiches at Braum's were good, the ice cream and frozen yogurt were what made the visit stand out among other chains.

Overall, going back to Braum's was a sweet experience. It was nice to try new-to-me foods, reminisce about my childhood, and create new memories with my husband.

Residents of the 45 states that don't have a Braum's are definitely missing out.
