  • Sean "Diddy" Combs used to be one of the richest people in the music industry.
  • His record label, Bad Boy Records, is just one source of his former empire.
  • Musicians like Faith Evans, Janelle MonΓ‘e, and Machine Gun Kelly were once signed to the label.

Before Sean Combs, also known as Diddy, was sued by more than a dozen people, alleging sexual misconduct among other things, he was a powerful music tastemaker, creating his own record label.

Diddy founded Bad Boy Records in 1993 and went on to sign major musicians such as The Notorious BIG, Mase, and Faith Evans. It's impossible to think of '90s and '00s rap without also thinking of Bad Boy, which released 13 No. 1 albums from 1997 to 2022.

Over the years, Bad Boy and its founder gained a reputation for being difficult to work with, highlighted by multiple public instances of friction between artists and the label.

In a statement provided to Business Insider, a representative for Combs said, "It's easy to reduce a 30-year legacy to a few negative statements, but that doesn't capture the full story."

"Sean Combs and Bad Boy Records were more than just a label β€” they were a cultural movement that shaped music, launched careers, and produced iconic hits," they said. "Focusing only on grievances distorts the narrative. The label's contributions remain an essential part of music history."

Before Diddy was arrested in September 2024, he had begun the process of reverting the publishing rights of many of Bad Boy's most famous songs to their original artists, provided they signed agreements, as reported by Billboard.

On Wednesday, a Manhattan jury found Diddy not guilty of sex trafficking and racketeering, but convicted him of two lesser charges: two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution.

"It's a great victory for Sean Combs. It's a great victory for the jury system," Diddy's lawyer Mark Agnifilo said, NBC reported.

Diddy, who remains in custody, is facing up to 20 years in prison, but experts say it's unlikely he'll serve for that long. His sentencing is scheduled for October. At this point, it's unclear what will happen to Diddy and his career.

Bad Boy is still in existence today and remains one source of Diddy's wealth. Here are 15 of the biggest acts that have released albums through Bad Boy since its inception.

Biggie was one of the first artists signed to Bad Boy, and his two studio albums ("Ready to Die" in 1994 and "Life After Death," which was released 16 days after his death in 1997) were released through Bad Boy.

Publicly, the two appeared to be close friends, and Diddy released "I'll Be Missing You" with Biggie's wife, Faith Evans, in 1997.

However, their relationship had become strained. Rolling Stone reported the "Juicy" rapper was preparing to leave Bad Boy. He "was absolutely about to leave Puff" before he was shot, fellow rapper Babs Bunny told the publication.

In the decades since his death, Biggie's mother Violetta Wallace (before her death in February 2025), negotiated with Diddy to gain control of her son's music, per Variety. In February 2025, his estate partnered with Primary Wave Music to handle his music in the future.

Primary Wave did not respond to a request for comment.

Evans, who was married to The Notorious BIG from 1994 until he died in 1997, was also signed to Bad Boy Records.

Her first three albums, 1995's "Faith," 1998's "Keep the Faith," and 2001's "Faithfully," were put out through Bad Boy. She then moved to Capitol Records.

"In my heart, I really wanted to try and leave Bad Boy after Big died. I mean, after I came back to any type of reality, any clear thinking. I just was so distraught," Evans told XXL in 2014.

Evans said she left Bad Boy because she felt Diddy and the label were paying more attention to other artists, but she emphasized that there was no bad blood.

Evans did not respond to a request for comment.

Mase released his first two albums, "Harlem World" and "Double Up" through Bad Boy, and was also known as Diddy's hype man through the '90s.

Their partnership collapsed after he released his third album, "Welcome Back," in 2004, also with Bad Boy.

Mase said he felt like his contract was too constricting, leading him to crash a Diddy interview on V103 in Atlanta and demand that Diddy sign paperwork allowing him to feature on other artists' songs.

Things simmered down until 2022, when Mase once again criticized Diddy's business practices in a now-deleted Instagram post.

"Your past business practices knowingly has continued purposely starved your artist and been extremely unfair to the very same artist that helped u obtain that Icon Award on the iconic Badboy label," he wrote.

Mase added that he had offered Diddy $2 million to buy his songs back and was refused. "This is not black excellence at all," he wrote.

Diddy responded during an interview on the syndicated iHeartRadio show "The Breakfast Club" and said that Mase actually owed him $3 million after failing to deliver an album.

In 2023, on another "Breakfast Club" appearance, Diddy said they were "brothers" and that he had "unconditional love" for Mase.

Mase's rights were returned to him when Diddy allowed songs from Bad Boy to revert back to artists that year.

In 2024, Mase called Diddy's arrest "the big payback" and added that "reparations is getting closer and closer" on an episode of the podcast he cohosts with Cam'ron, "It Is What It Is."

During the trial, Mase wondered aloud if he should attend Diddy's trial on his podcast, but it doesn't appear that he ever went.

Mase did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

The R&B group 112's first four albums were released through Bad Boy from 1996 to 2003. Most famously, they were featured alongside Diddy and Faith Evans on the song "I'll Be Missing You."

As MTV reported, 112 said that they left Bad Boy for Def Jam because of a "lack of money and attention." They added that they also left because their contract was "doo-doo."

"We still work with [Diddy] as far as getting ideas. We got three joints from his camp. It's no bad blood, it's no love lost," said member Mike in 2003.

"It's unfortunate what happened with Diddy," 112 member Slim said while appearing on "Ryan Cameron Uncensored" after the verdict was announced on Wednesday. "That's somebody people looked up to, and there was no win for any of the victims or anybody involved in the situation. It's more like you learn something from this."

112 did not respond to a request for comment.

Cassie started publicly dating Diddy shortly after her debut album, "Cassie," was released in 2006 through Bad Boy. They dated until 2018.

In November 2023, Cassie sued Diddy and accused him of rape, abuse, and blowing up Kid Cudi's car after Diddy found out the rapper was interested in Cassie. The suit was settled the same month for an undisclosed amount, The New York Times reported.

In May 2024, CNN published a 2016 video that appeared to show Diddy dragging and kicking Cassie through the halls of a California hotel.Β Diddy apologizedΒ in a since-deleted Instagram post and said he was "disgusted" by his behavior in the video.

In an Instagram post, Cassie thanked fans for their support after the video was made public. "The outpouring of love has created a place for my younger self to settle and feel safe now, but this is only the beginning," she wrote. "Domestic Violence is THE issue."

Cassie was one of the witnesses called during Diddy's trial, taking the stand for four days. "I hope that people still see what Cassie did and think that she really made a difference," her lawyer, Douglas H. Wigdor, told ABC News after the verdict announcement.

"She was pleased that he's been found guilty and held responsible to federal crimes, something that he's never been held responsible [for] in his entire life," Wigdor said outside the courthouse.

Cassie Ventura had no comment on the lawsuit when reached by Business Insider.

In December 1999, Diddy, his then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez, and his protΓ©gΓ©, Shyne, were arrested after a nightclub shooting, but Shyne was the only one who went to prison.

He was later convicted of assault and sentenced to 10 years in prison, reports The New York Times.

Bad Boy released his self-titled debut album in September 2000, while he was in prison.

In 2012, Shyne, who served almost nine years, told MTV that he and Diddy made amends.

"As far as Puff is concerned, that's been a long time coming," he said. "He had reached out to me twice while I was in the pen, but I just wasn't ready for it."

In 2024, he spoke about Diddy's legal troubles. He told journalists soon after Diddy's arrest, "Let us not forget what the cold facts are. This is someone who destroyed my life."

A Hulu documentary following Shyne, "The Honorable Shyne," is set to be released on November 18. In the trailer, he said he believed he was set up to be the fall guy for the shooting.

In December, he told People, "We live in a world, in democracies at least, where the rule of law is tantamount. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. I pray for justice, I pray for the victims. I pray for Diddy."

Shyne did not respond to a request for comment.

The Lox released their first album, 1998's "Money, Power & Respect," via Bad Boy before the trio β€” Sheek Louch, Styles P, and Jadakiss β€” left for Ruff Ryders and Interscope.

That wasn't without its drama. The Lox said they had to plead with Diddy to get off Bad Boy and started a grassroots campaign to "Free The Lox," as they felt they weren't receiving a fair publishing deal.

This culminated in a 2005 appearance on Hot 97 in which Styles P threw a chair at Diddy, per Billboard.

"We made one record with you, 'Money Power & Respect.' It's 10 years later, and you still got half of our publishing. And you can't make it justifiable that you deserve half of our publishing," Styles P is heard saying in the recording.

According to AllHipHop, a deal was struck soon after the altercation.

In 2023, Jadakiss appeared on an episode of the podcast "I Am Athlete," saying how he appreciated how Diddy handled the situation: "He could've played much harder ball than he played."

The Lox did not respond to a request for comment.

MonΓ‘e is one of the remaining artists signed to Bad Boy who isn't Diddy or his family members.

All four of MonΓ‘e's albums have been released through Bad Boy, including the 2019 album of the year nominee "Dirty Computer" and her most recent album, 2023's "The Age of Pleasure" (though both were also co-released by Atlantic Records).

"I got to say, I was scared to be partnering with a major label after a few years of being independent. I met Puff at a time I had decided to live frugally," MonΓ‘e told Billboard in 2018.

"But when I spoke to him, his words were, 'I love what you and Wondaland are doing," she continued, referencing the indie record label she had founded. "I don't want to be creatively involved. I just want people to know who you are and what you guys are doing.'"

"It was so humbling and beautiful. We're still close," she added.

MonΓ‘e did not respond to a request for comment.

Dream, a girl group, was formed in 1998 and then signed to Bad Boy as its first white act.

Their first album, "It Was All a Dream," was released in 2001 and debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200. Their second album, 2003's "Reality," failed to chart at all, and they were dropped from Bad Boy and broke up.

"There were some shady people who maybe didn't have the best intentions for children. And there were some people who maybe were just doing business," Ashley Poole, a former member, told Complex in 2016.

"There was a big disconnect from Puff and us because we were from such different worlds," continued Poole. "Puff was straight business. He didn't care if feelings were hurt. He said what he needed to say. He would tell us we needed to lose weight."

One of Dream's former members, Alex Chester-Iwata, told Business Insider that working with Bad Boy was "a nightmare," saying they "pitted each of us against each other."

Another group member, Holly Restani, told Business Insider what she thought of the verdict.

"Sean Combs, the same as all individuals, should be held accountable for his wrongdoings, namely his abuses of power, coercion, manipulation, violence, and harm of others in positions beneath him," she said.

"Many of these are well documented and known to many to have occurred. He was acquitted of the charges the prosecution brought in his trial. He is not free of accountability, nor is he innocent," she continued.

The other members of Dream did not respond to a request for comment.

Yung Joc was one of the biggest musicians signed to Bad Boy South, another offshoot of Bad Boy, this time focusing on rappers out of cities like Atlanta.

Both of the rapper's albums (2006's "New Joc City" and 2007's "Hustlenomics") were released by Bad Boy South.

Two years later, it went south: In 2009, Yung Joc told Billboard he was planning to sue Bad Boy and Block Entertainment, his original record label that partnered with Bad Boy, for "failure to pay royalties and advances for his first two albums and charging 'outrageous clearance fees' for his collaborations with other artists."

"Diddy said he's got to stay out of it because it's between me and Block Entertainment," he said, adding, "I feel like [Bad Boy] isn't doing anything to try to intervene and help the situation."

It's unclear if he ever filed the suit.

He hasn't released an album since, though he has put out singles and EPs independently.

In 2014, Yung Joc told The Grio, "Diddy and I are great. We made a lot of money together. Every time we've crossed paths since, it was love."

Yung Joc did not respond to a request for comment.

All four of French Montana's albums have been Bad Boy releases, most recently 2021's "They Got Amnesia."

"The deal [with Diddy] just felt right and it felt like it was the right thing to do. I felt like I can make a change with this for the music culture that I came from," Montana told Billboard in 2011.

In April 2024, during an episode of "Vlad TV," he confirmed he had left Bad Boy.

"I fulfilled everything. I make sure everybody got their money. I made sure, you know, Rozay got his money," he said, referring to rapper Rick Ross, who also owns a record label. "I made sure Puff got his money, made sure Epic got their money."

French added that he left Bad Boy on good terms with Diddy.

Montana did not respond to a request for comment.

After an eight-year hiatus, New EditionΒ teamed up with Bad BoyΒ for their first album, "One Love." ItΒ was released in 2004 and is their last album to date.

The band's members said there were lots of disagreements about the future of the band with Diddy and his label. In a 2005 radio interview, they opened up about the problems.

"Diddy, when we didn't agree with him on certain songs, we would get sent home for like six, seven months. You know, it would just be nothing being done," said member Ricky Bell.

The final straw, they said, came when a song that none of the members liked appeared on the album instead of a song they worked on together with their longtime producers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

"On top of that, Puffy paid himself $50,000, on top of that put a song on it that we didn't like, and we just felt like that was just a slap in the face. No respect," Bell added.

New Edition did not respond to a request for comment.

Pitbull released two albums via Bad Boy: 2006's "El Mariel" and 2007's "The Boatlift."

Pitbull was one of the first acts signed to Bad Boy Latino, an offshoot founded by Diddy and Emilio Estefan in 2005, per Billboard. He was also a partner in the venture and had an A&R role.

It didn't last long. Before "The Boatlift" was announced, Pitbull said he was leaving the label. Pitbull was dissatisfied with his role, a 2006 New York Post report said.

"I told him, 'Yo, I want a piece. If I'm gonna get in the bed with you, I want a piece,'" he said. "I got a whole lot to bring to the table, which [he] is gonna definitely capitalize off of."

Pitbull did not respond to a request for comment.

From 2012 to 2022, Machine Gun Kelly's six albums and three EPs were released through Bad Boy. His most recent EP, "Genre: Sadboy," was released in March through Interscope.

The "Wild Boy" rapper was first signed in 2011, as Diddy noted in a now-deleted Instagram post in August 2019.

"When I first signed @machinegunkelly I knew he was going to be a star. I didn't know how exactly we'd get there but I knew it would happen," he wrote. "'I'm so proud of the artist he is becoming, he's shown all the traits of an artist that will stand the test of time."

Kelly did not respond to a request for comment.

Both of B5's albums β€” 2005's "B5" and 2007's "Don't Talk Just Listen" β€” were released by Bad Boy. They were a departure from Bad Boy's roster, as the group was primarily a boy band that also appeared on Radio Disney.

During an interview with The Shade Room in 2023, the brothers said they didn't regret leaving Bad Boy. "We just couldn't see eye to eye so we decided to split," said Patrick Breeding.

They added that after Diddy announced his intentions to revert publishing to the original musicians, they hadn't heard anything from him.

"We didn't hear anything. We didn't get no calls or nothing like that from them," said Carnell Breeding.

Dustin Breeding added, "Puff, Diddy, yeah, we all want our publishing too. We were so young at the time, we didn't understand the business of it. But looking back now, damn, why our names wasn't on the credit?"

B5 did not respond to a request for comment.

The biggest box-office flop every year since the '70s

24 June 2025 at 17:44
Elio floating on a slide
"Elio" may end up being the biggest flop of 2025.

Pixar

  • For every box-office smash, there are disappointments that cost studios millions of dollars.
  • This year is shaping up to be a challenging one for Hollywood, with many films underperforming.
  • We've found the biggest box-office flop from every year since the 1970s.

"A Minecraft Movie" and "Sinners" made box-office history this year, but for every hit movieΒ there's a flop or two waiting to happen.

So far, 2025 is shaping up to be a weird year for Hollywood. Some anticipated hits, such as "Thunderbolts," failed to meet box-office expectations, while the latest Pixar film, "Elio," had the studio's worst opening in its history, at $35 million worldwide.

But they're not the first films in movie history to flop. Whether critically panned movies like "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword" or beloved cult classics like "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen," these movies just could not find their audience ... and cost their studios exorbitant amounts of money.

Keep scrolling to find out if you remember the biggest box-office flops from the past 40+ years.

1978: "Sextette"
sextette mae west 1978
"Sextette" was the legendary Mae West's last film.

Crown International Pictures

"Sextette" is the movie version of Mae West's last play, and filmmakers had a hard time finding a distributor from the get-go. Eventually, they decided to release it themselves and show it at the Cinemadome in Hollywood. According to "The Complete Films of Mae West," the movie grossed only about $50,000 against an estimated $8 million budget.

"Sextette" has many urban legends surrounding it regarding the deteriorating health of the then 85-year-old West β€” namely that she was senile and had to be fed her lines through an earpiece.

1979: "The Concorde... Airport '79"
the concorde airport 79 1979
"Concorde" is part of the "Airport" franchise.

Universal Pictures

"Concorde" is the fourth and final film in the "Airport" franchise. The first "Airport" movie made over $100 million at the box office, but it was all downhill from there. according to box-office tracking site The Numbers. Nine years later, the fourth film made just $13 million, less than half of the third installment.

1980: "Heaven's Gate"
heaven's gate christopher walken 1980
Heaven's Gate single-handedly shut down United Artists.

United Artists

By the sixth day of filming the Western "Heaven's Gate," production was already five days behind schedule. "Heaven's Gate" is one of the best-known flops of all time, as it lost the studio, United Artists, so much money that UA had to be sold, The Telegraph reported.

The film received rave reviews, however, after being re-edited and shown at the New York Film Forum in 2013, Slate reported. Critics praised its beauty and commitment to authenticity, which is what caused the film's budget to balloon.

1981: "Honky Tonk Freeway"
honky tonk freeway 1981
"Honky Tonk Freeway."

Universal Pictures

Why was "Honky Tonk Freeway," a comedy based in a small town in Florida, so expensive?

According to the Orlando Sentinel, it could've been because of the elephants that were brought in, or because the film required painting much of the real city of Mount Dora, Florida, bright pink, or because it had hundreds of extras. Whatever the reason, it ended up being the most expensive comedy film at the time, per The New York Times.

The film was critically panned and lost $22 million.

1982: "Inchon"
inchon 1982
The film is based on the invasion of the South Korean port of Inchon.

MGM/UA Entertainment Company

"Inchon" was never released on home video or DVD, so it lives only in the memories of those few who saw it in theaters (or on YouTube). The film took four years and almost $50 million to make: The New York Times called it the "most expensive B-movie ever made."

The movie had a total loss of almost $41 million at the time, according to FilmSite.

1983: "Krull"
krull 1983
"Krull."

Columbia Pictures

"Krull" is a sci-fi/fantasy film about a prince and a group of outlaws setting out to rescue his bride from alien invaders. The dismal contemporaneous reviews are preserved on Rotten Tomatoes, where it's described as an unsuccessful clone of other adventure movies like "Star Wars" and "Excalibur."

1984: "The Cotton Club"
nicolas cage the cotton club 1984
The movie is Nicolas Cage's fifth film credit ever.

Orion Pictures

"The Cotton Club" took five years to make and had highly publicized problems, such as budget overages and a feud between the film's producer, Robert Evans, and its director, Francis Ford Coppola.

The New York Times called the film "neither a smash nor a disaster," but the film's deficit begs to differ. IMDb says the film had an estimated budget of $58 million and made half that at the box office.

1985: "Revolution"
revolution al pacino 1985
Al Pacino.

Warner Bros.

A Revolutionary War movie starring Al Pacino sounds ... strange. Seeing the star of films like "Serpico" and "The Godfather" fighting for the Colonies' freedom, perhaps, didn't sit well with viewers. Deadspin even called it Pacino's worst film ever.

The numbers speak for themselves: a $358,574 box-office gross against an estimated $28 million budget, according to IMDb.

1986: "Howard the Duck"
howard the duck 1986
"Howard the Duck" was the first Marvel movie.

Universal Pictures

"Howard the Duck" is surely not what comes to mind when people today think of Marvel movies, but it was actually the first one, andΒ it was produced by George Lucas.

As a whole, the movie, about a duck from another planet who accidentally lands on Earth to stop an alien invasion, is pretty out-there. And it tanked so spectacularly that Frank Price resigned as Universal's president after it flopped, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Something good did come out of "Howard," though. Lucas, in debt from the movie and the creation of his Skywalker Ranch, sold the CGI branch of LucasFilm to Steve Jobs β€” it would eventually become Pixar.

1987: "Ishtar"
ishtar dustin hoffman warren beatty 1987
In recent years, "Ishtar" has become more popular.

Columbia Pictures

"Ishtar" was released on Blu-ray in 2013, prompting many critics to revisit the notorious flop β€” and many were shocked to find it's actually not bad.

The film's production (about two US songwriters in Morocco who find themselves in the middle of a CIA power play) was plagued with the most common problems of every box-office flop: delays, overspending, and issues among stars.

"Ishtar" went on to make only $14 million from a $51 million budget, according to The Guardian.

1988: "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen"
the adventures of baron munchausen 1988
A rare critically acclaimed flop.

Columbia Pictures

This movie is praised for its breathtaking visual effects. In fact, it was nominated for four Oscars: art direction, costume design, visual effects, and makeup and hairstyling.

Unfortunately, the high production value caused costs to skyrocket and made it almost impossible for the film, about an 18th-century German nobleman and his fight against the Ottoman Empire, to break even.

When all was said and done, the film had a loss of $38.5 million, according to FilmSite.

1989: "Pink Cadillac"
pink cadillac clint eastwood bernadette peters 1989
Bernadette Peters and Clint Eastwood in "Pink Cadillac."

Warner Bros.

The '80s were a rough decade for Clint Eastwood, and "Pink Cadillac," in which he plays a California bounty hunter, was a low point.

According to IMDb, the movie made only $12 million at the box office against an estimated budget of $19 million.

1990: "The Bonfire of the Vanities"
the bonfire of the vanities tom hanks bruce willis 1990
Tom Hanks and Bruce Willis in "The Bonfire of the Vanities."

Warner Bros.

This movie, about '80s-era Wall Street, was so controversial that a book about the behind-the-scenes drama, "The Devil's Candy: The Anatomy of a Hollywood Fiasco," was a huge success β€” more successful than the movie.

There are many reasons this adaptation of Tom Wolfe's novel of the same name didn't work out, but most point to it being miscast, having too many changes from the source material, and going way over budget.

The film ended up making $15.6 million against a $47 million budget.

1991: "Hudson Hawk"
hudson hawk bruce willis andie macdowell 1991
Bruce Willis in "Hudson Hawk."

TriStar Pictures

"Hudson Hawk," an absurdist spoof of action movies β€” like the ones that made Bruce Willis famous β€” lost almost $90 million at the box office, per The Guardian.

In its opening weekend it made just $7 million, according to Box Office Mojo, and thanks to terrible reviews it didn't stand a chance at coming anywhere close to turning a profit.

1992: "Hero"
hero dustin hoffman 1992
Dustin Hoffman played the titular "Hero."

Columbia Pictures

Known in the UK as "Accidental Hero," this movie is one of the more forgettable entries in Dustin Hoffman's extensive filmography. Even though it received decent reviews, according to Rotten Tomatoes, audiences apparently just weren't interested in seeing Hoffman save injured passengers from a plane crash.

The first "Addams Family" was a huge success, so β€” of course β€” there had to be a sequel. And for the most part, "Addams Family Values" was enjoyable β€” it even developed into a cult classic.

But at the time, the movie made less than half of what its predecessor had. Compared with other films of the year, like "Mrs. Doubtfire," it'd be impossible to call this movie a success.

1994: "North"

Dan Aykroyd, Elijah Wood, and Reba McEntire were just a small part of the A-list cast in "North."

Columbia Pictures

"North" is the story of a child prodigy (Elijah Wood) in search of his ideal parents.

According to Rolling Stone, the movie's budget was $40 million, and it took in just $7 million at the box office in the summer of 1994. Roger Ebert may have best explained why no one saw this movie when he wrote: "I hated this movie.Β Hated, hated, hated, hated, hated this movie. Hated it."

1995: "Cutthroat Island"

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM)

"Cutthroat Island" could have been a feminist pirate story, a rarity in Hollywood, but it ended up being an expensive mess. The film actually held the Guinness World Record for "History's Biggest Box Office Bomb" β€” according to "Freeze Frame," it cost $98 million to make and opened at $2.3 million. In total, it made just over $10 million.

1996: "Mary Reilly"

Sony Pictures Releasing

Did anyone ask for a retelling of the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde from the housekeeper's perspective? Audiences definitely didn't, because the movie was critically panned andΒ lost its studio a large amount of money. IMDb estimated its budget at $47 million, and the film made just $12 million.

1997: "The Postman"

Warner Bros.

Before dystopian future movies were all the rage, "The Postman," based on a short story about America fractured into multiple small groups with no central government, premiered in 1997. Its dismal reviews certainly gave no indication that movies like "The Hunger Games" could do so well years later.

The Telegraph reported that the film made just $18 million on its $80 million budget.

1998: "Beloved"

Buena Vista Pictures

"Beloved," based on aΒ Toni MorrisonΒ novelΒ about an Ohio mother haunted by her slave past (as well as a poltergeist), is a good movie β€” it has a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes.

But the quality of the film just didn't translate into box-office success. According to The Economist, Disney ended up writing it off after it made just $8 million during its opening weekend and saw a 50% drop-off the next weekend.

1999: "The 13th Warrior"

Buena Vista Pictures Distribution

"The 13th Warrior" is based on a novel written by Michael Crichton (author of "Jurassic Park") and directed by John McTiernan (director of "Die Hard" and "Predator"). By all accounts, this movie, loosely based on the tale of Beowulf, should have been a hit. But production costs ran high, and the film just couldn't recover.

The film had a $160 million budget and made just $61 million back, NME reported.

2000: "Titan A.E."

Twentieth Century Fox

According to IGN, just 10 days after "Titan A.E.," a sci-fi flick based in the distant future, opened to dismal box-office numbers, Fox Animation closed its doors β€” even though it had a hit with "Anastasia" in 1997. Fox took a $100 million loss on the animated film, reported Digital Spy.

Square, the company that financed "Final Fantasy," went on to quit the movie business and shut down its animation facility in Hawaii because of the overwhelmingly terrible numbers of "Final Fantasy," Variety reported. The film had a total loss of almost $95 million, Pajiba reported.Β

2002: "The Adventures of Pluto Nash"

"The Adventures of Pluto Nash" kicked off a streak of disappointing Eddie Murphy movies.

Warner Bros.

This movie, which is about a nightclub owner on the moon who refuses to sell his club to local mobsters, was plagued by costly re-shoots, pushed-back release dates, and terrible audience reactions at test screenings β€” by the time it was released, Murphy refused to do any publicity related to it, according to The Bomb Report.

2003: "Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas"

DreamWorks Distribution

"Sinbad" tanked so terribly that it almost bankrupted its studio, DreamWorks, after losing $125 million, according to Fox News. As a result of this box-office disaster, DreamWorks pivoted from hand-drawn animation altogether and focused more on computer-generated films (its next two movies were "Shrek 2" and "Madagascar").

2004: "The Alamo"

Buena Vista Pictures

"Remember the Alamo" is a rallying cry throughout Texas and the US as a whole, but Disney would probably like to forget about this 2004 movie about the 1836 standoff between Texan and Mexican soldiers.

According to a 2012 Time report, the movie lost over $146 million, which would be around $200 million in 2024 dollars.

2005: "Stealth"

Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE)

"Stealth," which is about three pilots involved in a top-secret military program, finished fourth in its opening weekend, behind the popular films "Wedding Crashers," "Sky High," and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." There was no way this movie was going to do well when faced with that type of competition. Plus, it has just 13% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Box Office Scoop reported a $111.7 million loss.

2006: "Poseidon"

Warner Bros.

This disaster-at-sea epic is definitely no "Titanic." It holds a 33% score on Rotten Tomatoes and was nominated for a Razzie Award for worst remake or ripoff. Just like the Poseidon, the film sank, losing $83 million, according to FilmSite.

2007: "Evan Almighty"

"Evan Almighty" was not as popular as its predecessor, "Bruce Almighty."

Universal Pictures

"Bruce Almighty" made almost $500 million, so it makes sense that studios thought that a sequel starring Steve Carell and Lauren Graham would be box-office gold β€” turns out, those two couldn't compete with Jim Carrey and Jennifer Aniston.

"Evan Almighty" took over the distinction of most expensive comedyΒ from "Honky Tonk Freeway" and cost $175 million to produce β€” andΒ did not come close to making a profit.

2008: "Speed Racer"

Warner Bros.

The 2008 remake of "Speed Racer," a popular anime series that ran in the '60s, was praised by outlets such as The Hollywood Reporter for its visual effects, but critics agreed the story left a lot to be desired.

Those special effects racked up the film's budget, and the public didn't much want to see the film, which made only $93 million against a $120 million budget, according to Inverse.

2009: "Land of the Lost"

TheΒ then-Universal Studios president said it best at the 2011 Savannah Film Festival: "'Land of the Lost' was just crap. I mean, there was no excuse for it. 'Land of the Lost' was a huge loss. We misfired. We were wrong."

The time-traveling would-be epic had a box-office deficit ofΒ $31.3 million.

"The Nutcracker in 3D" has Nazi rats, sharks, a singing Albert Einstein, and absolutely no ballet. It's not surprising it couldn't find its audience. The movie only made $17 million against a $90 million budget.

2011: "Mars Needs Moms"
mars need moms 2011
Motion-capture animation pushed this movie's budget up astronomically.

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

According to NME, "Mars Needs Moms" has the questionable distinction of having the worst box-office numbers of any Disney film ever made. The film also had the 10th-worst opening weekend of any movie since 1982 (at the time β€” in a post-COVID box-office, the film is now down to No. 57).

Why did it do so poorly? People thought the motion-capture style looked creepy, the title reportedly alienated boys, and the thought of seeing a mom get kidnapped was too scary for kids.

Time estimated a loss of $140 million in 2012 dollars, which would be $196 million today.

2012: "John Carter"

"John Carter" was a starring vehicle for Taylor Kitsch.

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

The box-office misfortune of "John Carter" can perhaps be blamed on its marketing β€” few knew what this movie was even about (a Civil War vet who wakes up on a planet inhabited by giants).

This movie did so terribly that estimates of how much money Disney lost because of it became a heated topic of discussion. Walt Disney Studios eventually announced it was taking a $200 million second-quarter write-down because of "John Carter," according to The Hollywood Reporter.

2013: "47 Ronin"

Universal Pictures

"47 Ronin" had a lot of problems. The story the movie was based on was famous only in Japan, and the casting of Keanu Reeves instead of someone of Japanese descent to play the main character, a leaderless samurai avenging the death of his master, caused uproar.

Ultimately, it was a tremendous flop, making $151 million against a reported budget of $175 million.

2014: "Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return"

Clarius Entertainment

"Legends of Oz" earned just $3.7 million in its first weekend and only $19 million worldwide β€” 27% of its estimated production cost of $70 million, Forbes reported.

The film was also plagued by behind-the-scenes drama as producers and fundraisers were accused of pocketing millions of dollars,Β The Wrap reported.

2015: "Pan"

Warner Bros.

Another year, another reboot that tanked. "Pan," a prequel to JM Barrie's "Peter Pan," was controversial before it even was released because of the casting of Rooney Mara (a white woman) as Tiger Lily, a Native American in the original.

Vulture reported that the film could've lost Warner Bros. up to $150 million.

2016: "Ben-Hur"

Paramount Pictures

"Ben-Hur" β€” the original β€” is one of the most iconic films of all time. So, of course, Hollywood thought a reboot would be a box-office gold. Unfortunately, the film β€” about a prince falsely accused of treason β€” was widely panned, with a 25% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it made less than $100 million worldwide.

2017: "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword"

Warner Bros.

It turns out that audiences also didn't want to see another reboot of the legend of King Arthur. We included it on our list of most disappointing movies of 2017, and it's hard to disagree with the numbers. It earned just $15.4 million its opening weekend and is thought to have lost at least $150 million total, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

2018: "Mortal Engines"

Universal Pictures

The movie, based on the 2001 novel of the same name, ended up being another forgettable dystopian sci-fi flick. The premise β€” that after a catastrophic war, humanity turned cities into mobile "predator cities" β€” was just too strange for people to connect with.

The film had a disastrous opening weekend, making only $7.5 million, and dropped off another 76% the next weekend. After its release, Deadline posited that the movie stood to lose over $100 million.

2019: "Playmobil: The Movie"

STXfilms

The "Playmobil" movie broke a record upon its release β€” though not a positive one. It made just $670,000 across more than 2,000 screens in the US, making it the lowest box office of any newly released movie to open on that many screens. The Independent went so far as to call it the worst box-office flop of all time.

According to Box Office Mojo, the film, based on the Playmobil toys in an apparent bid to replicate the success of "The Lego Movie," made only $1.1 million in the US and $16 million worldwide. It had a $75 million budget, according to ComicBook.com.

2020: The box office as a whole

Universal

It's impossible to say what the biggest flop of 2020 was. So many films went straight to streaming or VOD due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and those numbers aren't readily available.

What we can do is list the movies that probably would have been hits, if not for COVID-19: "Mulan," "Dolittle," "Wonder Woman 1984," "Soul," "Onward," "Tenet" ... the list goes on.

2021: "Chaos Walking"

Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley starred in "Chaos Walking."

Lionsgate

As Business Insider's Travis Clark pointed out, the 2021 box office was not much better than 2020.

But the film that bombed the hardest was perhaps the dystopian thriller "Chaos Walking," despite its major star power. It starred Tom Holland (who's played Spider-Man β€” ever heard of him?) and Daisy Ridley (the most recent lead of the "Star Wars" franchise).

The film had a reported budget of $125 million, but made only $26.5 million.

Just a few months later, Holland starred in "Spider-Man: No Way Home," which brought a struggling box office back to life β€” however temporarily β€” by making $1.9 billion. Its success seems to suggest that perhaps it's the Marvel name, notΒ Holland's star power, that fills seats.

2022: "Strange World"

"Strange World" is one of the biggest flops in Disney's history.

Walt Disney Animation

Deadline crowned "Strange World" the biggest flop of 2022. The animated action-adventure starred Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, Jaboukie Young-White, Gabrielle Union, and Lucy Liu, but that star-studded cast didn't translate to box-office gold.

The publication reported "Strange World" lost a breathtaking $197 million, after making a record-low $18 million in its five-day opening weekend (extended due to Thanksgiving).

2023: "The Marvels"

Laura Radford/Marvel Studios

Unfortunately for Disney, the studio had the biggest flop of the year for the second year in a row. "The Marvels'" box-office struggles were blasted across the internet, with many outlets proclaiming that the MCU might be dead in the water β€” though the quality of the film is, in Business Insider's opinion, underrated.

Forbes reported "The Marvels," the sequel to $1 billion grosser "Captain Marvel," lost $237 million, since its budget was over $450 million and the film made just $206 million.

2024: "Megalopolis"

Lionsgate Films

Could it have been anything else? Francis Ford Coppola, the director responsible for some of the most critically acclaimed and important movies of the 20th century, put a significant portion of his own fortune on the line and borrowed at least $100 million to produce "Megalopolis."

Unfortunately, Coppola's iconic career, a cast full of impressive actors, and an audience participation gimmick weren't enough to get people to the theater. The film made just $14.3 million at the worldwide box office against a budget of $120 million, per Variety.

15 of the best movie trilogies you need to see in your lifetime

20 June 2025 at 16:20
marty mcfly back to the future
"Back to the Future" is an all-time trilogy.

Universal Pictures

  • Trilogies have been part of storytelling for decades; they have a clear beginning, middle, and end.
  • While most make hundreds of millions of dollars,Β not all cinematic trilogies are created equal.
  • The best film trilogies include "How to Train Your Dragon" and "The Naked Gun."

In 2025, sequels, prequels, remakes, reboots, and legacy sequels are ubiquitous. Trilogies, however, are a little more special.

Some of the trilogies on this list were perhaps turned into three movies because of the potential for billions at the box office β€” the "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy, for example, made $2.4 billion worldwide β€” but many of these stories simply couldn't be told in just one film.

Imagine "Lord of the Rings" ending after "Fellowship" or "Star Wars" with no "Empire Strikes Back" or "Return of the Jedi." It'd be a tragedy for any cinema buff.

More recently, the "How to Train Your Dragon" trilogy has proven so popular that an entire theme park land was created around it at Epic Universe, and a live-action remake of the first film is lighting up the box office.

Here are some of the best trilogies in Hollywood history, and where to stream them.

"How to Train Your Dragon"
how to train your dragon 2
"How to Train Your Dragon."

DreamWorks Animation

The sole animated trilogy on this list, the "How to Train Your Dragon" trilogy, proved that Disney didn't have a monopoly on beautifully told stories from 2010 to 2019.

The series, released by DreamWorks Animation, focused on the story of Hiccup, an awkward teenager who discovers that dragons, long-feared by his entire community as raging beasts, aren't what they seem.

As Hiccup (spoiler) loses his leg at the climax of the film, he is seen using a prosthetic in the next two films, making him a landmark in disability and amputee representation, as reported by The Washington Post.

Additionally, the score for this trilogy is so awe-inspiring that it became a meme on TikTok.

However, the real draw of this series is the absolutely heartwarming bond between Hiccup and his downright adorable dragon, Toothless. They're best friends! It's beautiful!

It's so popular that one of the lands at Universal Studios' Epic Universe is the Isle of Berk, where you can meet all your favorite characters in real life β€” even Toothless.

All three "How to Train Your Dragon" movies are streaming on Peacock. The first one is also available on HBO Max.

"The Lord of the Rings"
sam and frodo
"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King."

New Line Cinema

The "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, released from 2001 to 2003, told a sprawling tale of good versus evil set in a fictional world called Middle Earth.

Based upon J. R. R. Tolkien's series of books, there hadn't (and still hasn't) been anything quite like director Peter Jackson's trilogy. All three were filmed back-to-back in New Zealand, letting the actors and the creative team fully immerse themselves in the fantasy world.

And what a world Middle Earth is. It contains beautiful landscapes, compelling heroesΒ andΒ villains in Frodo, Gandalf, Saruman, and Gollum, and an inspiring story of the little guy triumphing over the strongest evil force in the world.

Any trilogy with extended cuts that are 4 hours long and that people genuinely loveΒ watching deserves its place on this list. Plus, all three were nominated for best picture at the Oscars, with the third and final installment, "The Return of the King," winning the top prize in 2004.

The "Lord of the Rings" trilogy is available to stream on HBO Max, while the prequel series "Rings of Power" is streaming on Prime Video.

"Back to the Future"
Back to the Future
"Back to the Future."

Universal Pictures

The "Back to the Future" trilogy, which is celebrated every October 21 as the day Marty (an '80s teenager played by Michael J. Fox) travels in time, was a full-blown phenomenon in the '80s and '90s.

The films made an A-list movie star out of Fox, introduced Christopher Lloyd, who plays Marty's best friend and disgraced nuclear physicist Doc Brown, to a new generation, and made everyone long for flying skateboards and sneakers that tied themselves.

While we're still not at the level of technology we saw in "Back to the Future 2," the appeal of the story of Marty trying to simultaneously improve his parents' lives, save Doc from an untimely death, and ultimately return home from the Wild West, remains timeless.

So much so that a musical adaptation of the first film ran for two years on Broadway.

The "Back to the Future" trilogy is available to rent online.

"The Naked Gun"
the naked gun

Paramount Pictures

After the mega-success of "Airplane!" in 1980, Leslie Nielsen once again spoofed a well-known profession with "The Naked Gun": a detective. Without "Naked Gun," we might not have gotten "Reno 911," "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," or even the "Austin Powers" movies.

"The Naked Gun" was such a huge success upon its 1988 release that two more sequels following the lovably dimwitted cop Sgt. Frank Drebin (Nielsen) were commissioned in 1991 and 1994.

Sgt. Drebin is so enduring that more than 30 years later, Liam Neeson was tapped to star in a "Naked Gun" reboot. It's set for release in August 2025.

The "Naked Gun" trilogy is available to stream on Paramount+.

"The Man with No Name"
a fistful of dollars
"A Fistful of Dollars."

United Artists

Clint Eastwood starred in the "Man with No Name" trilogy, consisting of 1964's "A Fistful of Dollars," 1965's "For a Few Dollars More," and 1966's "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" β€” and a fun fact: This trilogy was actually craftedΒ afterΒ the movies were released.

These Spaghetti Westerns were first released in Italy. Once United Artists picked up the distribution rights, the studio decided to package them togetherΒ as one trilogy starring Eastwood as the titular man with no name (even though his characters doΒ have different names in each).

However, these three movies changed Hollywood forever, as they introduced Eastwood to the movie-going masses, a move that affected the next 60 years (and counting) of cinema.

Director Sergio Leone's aesthetic has influenced countless movies and TV shows, including hits like "The Mandalorian." And, of course, Ennio Morricone's theme for "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly"Β is still one of the most recognizable pieces of music of all time.

The "Man with No Name" trilogy is streaming on Tubi and Prime Video.

"The Dark Knight" trilogy
the dark knight
"The Dark Knight."

Warner Bros.

There's an argument to be made that Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy, released from 2005 to 2012, is the best superhero trilogy of all time.

But when Christian Bale took over as the Caped Crusader in 2005, it wasn't a given that the film would be a huge success, never mind that its sequel would become the first superhero to have an actor win an Academy Award (Heath Ledger, posthumously, for his performance as the Joker in "The Dark Knight").

Arguably, "The Dark Knight" (and the two films it's sandwiched between) changed the comic-book/superhero genre forever, paving the way for what it's become today β€” one of the most important genres at the box office β€” as well as the grittier and darker aesthetic many films adopted after.

Even ifΒ everyone isn't 100% satisfied with the trilogy's conclusion, "The Dark Knight Rises" was a huge box-office success and, 13 years later, is now one of the more impressive franchise-ending films.

"The Dark Knight" trilogy is available to stream on HBO Max.

Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man"

Sony

If "Batman Begins" and its two sequels were more a realistic, grittier adaptation of a comic book, 2002's "Spider-Man" and its two sequels were ripped directly from the pages of Stan Lee's and Steve Ditko's comics in the '60s. Tobey Maguire looked eerily like a classic drawing of Peter Parker.

Even if "Spider-Man 3" didn't live up to the hype of the first two, "Spider-Man" and "Spider-Man 2" are some of the best comic-book movies of all time.

The "Spider-Man" trilogy is available to stream on Disney+.

"Guardians of the Galaxy"
guardians of the galaxy
"Guardians of the Galaxy."

Disney

The lone MCU trilogy to make its way on this list is the "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy. Expectations were low when the first "Guardians" film was released in 2014. Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Drax, and Groot were by no means beloved characters, and director James Gunn had never helmed a production of this magnitude before.

Thankfully, it was a breath of fresh air. The soundtrack was amazing, the characters were lovable and hilarious, and the look was so different from the rest of the primarily grounded Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"Vol. 2" followed in 2017, adding the wonderful Mantis and officially welcoming Nebula to the team.

Gunn made it clear that "Vol. 3," which was released in 2023, would be his final outing with this iteration of the Guardians, and they all had fittingly bittersweet endings.

The "Guardians" trilogy is available to stream on Disney+.

The original "Star Wars" trilogy

"Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back."

Disney

Decades after its original release from 1977 to 1983, we're stillΒ getting new "Star Wars" content, between the multitude of Disney+ shows, multiple cartoons, and two more sequel trilogies (neither of which lived up to the hype of the original space opera).

But even though we're still living in a sprawling, extended "Star Wars" universe, George Lucas' first trilogy of "A New Hope," "The Empire Strikes Back," and "Return of the Jedi," tells a relatively simple story that anyone can relate to: A small-town boy pines to explore the world, only to find out that life is much more complicated (and wonderful) when you leave your bubble.

Just add in some of fiction's most charming characters (Han Solo, Princess Leia, Obi-Wan Kenobi) and an iconically terrifying villain (Darth Vader), and you have three of the most influential, beloved movies ever.

The "Star Wars" trilogy is available to stream on Disney+.

"Night of the Living Dead"
Night of the Living Dead
"Night of the Living Dead."

Continental Distributing

There were horror movies before this trilogy, but nothing had come along quite like "Night of the Living Dead" upon its release in 1968.

The first film, which focuses on a small group of strangers riding out a zombie apocalypse in an abandoned cabin, is not just considered the first modern zombie movie β€” you're welcome, "Walking Dead" fans β€” but also one of the best horror films and one of the most influential movies of all time.

The next two follow-ups, released in 1978 and 1985 and also directed by indie film legend George Romero, continued the series.

While thereΒ areΒ more also directed by Romero, they came 20+ years after the third film, and aren't held in quite the same esteem.

"Night of the Living Dead" and "Day of the Living Dead" are streaming on Tubi, while "Dawn of the Dead" is available to rent.

"The Godfather"

Paramount Pictures/IMDb

Not many trilogies can boast a three-for-three best picture nomination statistic (perhaps the only other trilogy might be the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy). But only "The Godfather" trilogy can claim two best picture wins, for its first two films.

The Italian-American mafia story has one of the greatest casts ever assembled β€” Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, James Caan, Robert Duvall, and Andy GarcΓa, to name a few β€” and kick-started a mob/organized craze in pop culture that we're still living in today, including "Scarface," "Goodfellas," "The Sopranos," "Mob Wives," "Peaky Blinders," "MobLand," and more.

The "Godfather" trilogy is available to stream on Paramount+. Note that the third film is the newly recut version by Coppola re-titled "The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone."

"Indiana Jones"
indiana jones
"Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade."

Paramount Pictures

After the success of "Star Wars," Harrison Ford again teamed up with its creator George Lucas and none other than Steven Spielberg to bring one of the most iconic heroes to the big screen: Indiana Jones, an archaeology professor who also has the combat skills of a super-soldier.

And the original "Indiana Jones" trilogy, 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark," 1984's "Temple of Doom," and 1989's "The Last Crusade," remain exciting adventure films decades later β€” but the less we speak of 2008's "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" the better and 2023's "Dial of Destiny" is good, but not entirely necessary.

The "Indiana Jones" trilogy and "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" are available to stream on Disney+ and Paramount+. "Dial of Destiny" is only on Disney+.

The "Before" trilogy

Columbia Pictures

The story of Jesse and CΓ©line begins in 1995 when two strangers meet on a train to Budapest and decide to roam around the city of Vienna to kill time. They bond over their shared love of music and their similar outlook on life.

Much of the film's dialogue was cowritten by the stars, making actors Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy's conversations all the more relatable and watchable.

In an interesting turn of events, the actors reunited nine years later for "Before Sunset" and nine years after that for "Before Midnight" to check in on the couple to see how love realistically evolves over two decades.

"Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset" are available to rent online. "Before Midnight" is streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.

Director Sam Raimi has another trilogy on this list: the "Evil Dead" trilogy, consisting of "The Evil Dead" in 1981, "Evil Dead II" in 1987, and "Army of Darkness" in 1992.

The "Evil Dead" movies, or the "Ash Gets Punished Over Thousands of Years" trilogy, are cited as some of the most influential horror/comedy films of all time by outlets like Screen Rant. They were shepherded by director Raimi and star Bruce Campbell.

"Evil Dead" and its two sequels (well, one sequel and one remake/reboot) flawlessly balanced the black comedy and the horror staples of the zombie genre, paving the way for "Shaun of the Dead," "Ready or Not," "Scream," or even "Get Out."

"The Evil Dead" and "Army of Darkness" are available to rent, while "Evil Dead II" is streaming on The Roku Channel and Plex.

"The Vengeance Trilogy"

CJ Entertainment

"The Vengeance Trilogy" isn't a trilogy with connecting characters, but rather is connected via themes of revenge and retribution.

South Korean director Park Chan-wook didn't initially consider 2002's "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance," 2003's "Oldboy," and 2005's "Lady Vengeance" a trilogy, but it's clear that each film deals with similar themes.

All are films focusing on a character who is hell-bent on getting revenge on those who have wronged them β€” although, in the case of "Oldboy," it's unclear who's actually getting revenge.

Be warned: These movies are not for the faint of heart. But they are thought-provoking, disturbing, and well-acted.

"Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" and "Lady Vengeance" are available to stream on Tubi and AMC+, and "Oldboy" is on Paramount+.

  • Traditionally, Friday the 13th is considered a "cursed" date, but it doesn't have to be.
  • President Johnson signed an executive order preventing gender discrimination on October 13, 1967.

Friday the 13th has a long history of freaking people out.

When this day rolls around, people buy and travel less. In fact, the global economy is estimated to lose as much as $900 million every time a Friday lands on the 13th.

However, the Dutch Center for Insurance Statistics reported in 2008 that Friday the 13th is actually statistically safer than other Fridays β€” there are fewer accidents and reports of fire and theft on these days.

If that doesn't convince you, keep scrolling to learn about some positive events that took place on a Friday the 13th.

19 terrible things that happened on Friday the 13th

  • June 13 is a Friday.
  • Friday the 13th has been a superstitious date for a very long time, but no one knows exactly why.
  • There are multiple examples of terrible or tragic events happening on these Fridays in history.

Friday the 13th is so famously unlucky that there's even a phobia dedicated to it: friggatriskaidekaphobia.

Even if you personally don't put stock in this fear, there are a lot of people who do. The Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute even estimated in 2013 that between $800 and $900 million are lost in business every Friday the 13th because people are afraid to shop, travel, and conduct business.

Luckily for believers, this is the only Friday the 13th of 2025. The next one isn't until February 2026.

But if you still think it's just a superstition, these events might be enough to convince even the most determined skeptic.

German forces during WWII bombed Buckingham Palace on September 13, 1940. The bombs hit both the palace and its chapel.

Even scarier, the king and queen were at the residence at the time of the attack. Even though the event was traumatic, Queen Elizabeth II β€” then a princess β€” merely stated she was "glad we have been bombed. Now I can look the East End in the face," the BBC reported.

The murder of Kitty Genovese took place on March 13, 1964. The New York Times reported Genovese was assaulted and killed by Winston Moseley inside her apartment building. The crime is famous because, reportedly, 38 people heard the attack, and none of them called the police, making the "bystander effect" a household term.

It was later suggested that the reporting of the crime was inaccurate and greatly exaggerated. No matter the specifics, an innocent woman died.

On July 13, 1951, the state of Kansas was hit with over 25 inches of rain. The cities of Manhattan, Lawrence, and Topeka were most affected, and over 2 million acres of land were damaged by the flood.

The storm also affected oil tanks, some of which caught on fire and exploded. There were passengers stuck on trains for four days. And, at its highest, the flooding exceeded previous records by 4 to 9 feet.

The people of Kansas were not wrong to call this day "Black Friday."

Uruguayan Flight 571 was headed toward Chile when it crash-landed in the Andes on October 13, 1972. In the following days, the survivors were reduced to hiding in the fuselage of the plane and eating the deceased passengers.

The rescue efforts were called off only 10 days after the crash, so it was shocking when two men appeared 72 days later and alerted the authorities that there were 16 other survivors trapped in the mountains.

On that same day, another flight crashed in Russia.

At the time, the tragedy of Aeroflot 217 was the worst plane crash in Russian history. All 174 people on board the flight (including the 10 crew members) died when the plane crashed while trying to land due to bad weather.

It's never been confirmed what the cause of the crash was β€” some speculate it was a lightning strike. The plane ended up just 3 miles away from the runway.

The storm officially ended on November 13, 1970, but its effects are still being felt today.

The Bhola cyclone is still the deadliest storm in the Bay of Bengal β€” the death toll is estimated to be from 150,000 to 550,000, NBC News reported. One district in Bangladesh lost over 45% of its population.

In addition to being deadly and extremely costly, the cyclone is credited with jump-starting a civil war. At the time of the storm, the area was called East Pakistan. The Pakistani mismanagement of the relief efforts was considered to be a huge event in the fight for Bangladeshi independence.

A Swedish flight disappeared while flying over the Baltic Sea on June 13, 1952. And for 40 years, the Swedish government stuck by the story that the plane was merely performing training exercises.

However, National Geographic wrote that in the '90s, it was leaked that the crewmembers were actually spying on the Soviet Union for NATO, even though Sweden was officially neutral during the Cold War.

Russia responded with its own confession: A Russian pilot told a Swedish diplomat he had shot the plane down.

The fires in Victoria from 1939 to 1940 were the culmination of a long, dry summer. But on January 13, 1939, the Black Friday bushfires consumed the area: 71 people died directly from the fire, another 438 from the resulting heatwave, and 575,000 hectares of land were burned to a crisp.

The ash that resulted from the two days of flames was intense. There were reports of it reaching as far as New Zealand.

The 2024 Boeing machinists strike began on Friday, September 13, 2024, and lasted until November 4.

For almost two months, Boeing strikers were without salary or benefits, while the company lost an estimated $50 million a day in lost labor.

At one point, tensions were so high between the union and management that the US Labor secretary herself, Julie Su, flew out to Seattle to mediate.

The strike ended when union members voted to accept a new contract from Boeing that included pay increases.

According to NASA, an asteroid, 99942 Apophis., is expected to come within 20,000 miles of the Earth on April 13, 2029. This might not seem like a big deal, but it's actually extremely close in relation to space.

Although it's not expected to hit our planet, the closeness of the asteroid could cause damage on its surface β€” the gravity of Earth might cause avalanches on Apophis. And while NASA says it is expected to pass Earth "safely," it still calls it a "potentially hazardous asteroid."

All 19 Disney live-action remakes ranked from tolerable to downright unwatchable

28 May 2025 at 16:34

"Lilo & Stitch."

Disney

  • In 2010, Disney began releasing live-action remakes of some of its classic animated films in earnest.
  • While most were successful at the box office, their artistic value has been questioned.
  • In almost every case, the original animated film is superior to its live-action remake.

Remaking animated films or TV shows in live-action is becoming more frequent in Hollywood β€” just look at shows like "Avatar: The Last Airbender," "One Piece," and "Cowboy Bebop."

But the studio that has done this most successfully β€” and most frequently β€” is Disney. There have been 19 live-action remakes or reimaginings of its classic animated films, give or take a few additional sequels.

While not all of them have been well-reviewed β€” and, arguably, they're mediocre at best β€” most of these movies made a lot of money at the box office. For example, "Beauty and the Beast," "Alice in Wonderland," "Aladdin," and "The Lion King" all crossed the $1 billion mark, according to Box Office Mojo data β€” and with the way that "Lilo & Stitch" has been overperforming this month, the House of Mouse may have another billion-dollar movie on its hands.

We ranked these movies based on their quality, the changes made from the source material, casting, and more.

Here are all 19 live-action remakes, ranked from worst to best β€”Β in our opinion.

19. "Alice in Wonderland" (2010)
a still from the 2016 film alice through the looking glass
"Alice Through the Looking Glass."

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

"Alice in Wonderland" has aged poorly, from its star to its aesthetic. It's been 15 years since it was released in 2010, and since then, director Tim Burton has only become less beloved by audiences ("Wednesday" on Netflix and the nostalgia of "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" aside). His whimsical goth vision ages this movie β€” everything sort of looks like it came straight out of Hot Topic.

Additionally, Johnny Depp's performance as the Mad Hatter, which was grating at the time, now feels harder to watch after his myriad controversies.

This movie did make over $1 billion worldwide (enough to justify an even worse sequel in 2016, "Alice Through the Looking Glass"), but we venture to say if you turned this on now, you'd barely make it to Alice falling down the rabbit hole.

18. "Pinocchio" (2022)
a still from the 2022 live-action adaptation of Pinocchio
"Pinocchio."

Disney+

Point-blank, "Pinocchio" is scary to look at, and the less we say about this 2022 movie, the better.

Pinocchio, the character, has veered so far into the uncanny valley that it's hard to look at him. Add in a new (and unnecessary) seagull, aggressively voiced by Lorraine Bracco, the sanitation of the original movie's intentionally horrific Pleasure Island sequence, and some bad CGI … and this movie is just a dud.

It went straight to Disney+, so we'll never know how successful it actually was with audiences.

It doesn't help that a superior adaptation of the fairytale this is based on was released the same year: "Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio." If you want to watch a talking puppet, we'd recommend you stick to that version.

17. "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" (2010)
a still from the 2010 film the sorcerer's apprentice
"The Sorcerer's Apprentice."

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

You might not even remember that the 2010 film "The Sorcerer’s Apprentice" exists.

This is a loose adaptation, but we're counting it. It's based on a segment from the 1940 anthology film "Fantasia" and its 1999 sequel, "Fantasia 2000." In the original short, Mickey Mouse plays an impatient apprentice who is sick of doing chores and decides to steal his master's magic hat, to disastrous effect.

The 2010 live-action version stars Nicolas Cage as the wizened sorcerer, while Jay Baruchel takes on the role of the apprentice.

This movie's main issue is that it's forgettable. It suffers from being, above all else, boring. It has very 2010 action and special effects, and as a result, made $215 million against a $150 million budget, the Los Angeles Times reported in 2010.

This movie is also part of why director Jon Turteltaub and Cage never made "National Treasure 3" β€” at least according to Cage's 2022 interview with GQ β€” and we'll never be over it.

16. "Dumbo" (2019)
a still from the 2019 live-action adaptation of dumbo
"Dumbo."

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Was anyone desperate for a remake of the 1941 original "Dumbo," which has very questionable racial politics, a harrowing scene in which Dumbo, a baby elephant, gets drunk and hallucinates, and not much else? We think not.

The 2019 remake, once again directed by Tim Burton, pretty much does away with all of that. There are no crows, no Timothy Q. Mouse, or any talking animals at all β€” Dumbo is silent. Instead, the action is moved to entirely new human characters, who are all forgettable.

That's this movie's biggest sin β€” it doesn't justify its existence at all. And judging by its poor box-office numbers, audiences weren't sure what to think of it, either.

15. "Lady and the Tramp" (2019)
a still from the 2019 live-action adaptation of lady and the tramp
"Lady and the Tramp."

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

The original "Lady and the Tramp" from 1955 is another example of Disney's problematic past coming back to bite it. "The Siamese Cat Song," sung by cats Si and Am, is so racist that Disney added a disclaimer to the beginning of the film on Disney+.

So, the 2019 remake, which went straight to the streaming service, gets points for fixing that by adding two new cats, Devon and Rex.

Besides that, there's not much else to say about this live-action/CGI hybrid. Unlike "The Lion King" remake, Lady, Tramp, Jock, Trusty, Peg, etc., are played by real dogs and aren't just photorealistic creations. But we'd argue it's just not as fun to see two real dogs doing the famous spaghetti kiss.

14. "101 Dalmatians" (1996)
a still from the 1996 live-action adaptation of 101 dalmatians
"101 Dalmatians."

Buena Vista Pictures Distribution

This 1996 remake was the first true live-action adaptation of a Disney movie. We're not exactly sure why this remake of the 1961 animated film was Disney's first attempt, but we like it: It updates the setting to modern-day London, switching Roger from a composer to a video-game designer.

Glenn Close's deliciously unhinged performance as Cruella is what elevates this movie β€” it's probably why we got a Cruella prequel 25 years later.

This was a box-office success β€”Β grossing $320 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo β€” and spawned a 2000 sequel, "102 Dalmatians." Only Close returned from the main cast.

13. "Maleficent" (2014)
a still from the 2016 film maleficent
"Maleficent."

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Instead of making a straight-up remake of 1959's "Sleeping Beauty," Disney took a different approach with 2014's "Maleficent."

Rather than centering on Aurora, aka Sleeping Beauty, this film is the story of Maleficent, who is only seen as an evil sorceress in the original. This movie gives her a backstory and a relationship with Aurora's father, Stefan.

While this sounds good in theory, "Maleficent" is perfectly average. Angelina Jolie gives it her all as Maleficent, but the special effects are dated, and the story isn't memorable.

It took five years for a sequel to come out ("Maleficent: Mistress of Evil"), and by then, the momentum from the financial success of "Maleficent" had apparently slowed.

12. "Snow White"

"Snow White."

Disney

It was only a matter of time before Disney took it all the way back to its first animated theatrical release: 1937's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs."

Sure, Snow White is iconic as the first Disney princess movie, and "Whistle While You Work" and "Heigh-Ho" are permanently part of the Disney canon, but have you watched this movie recently, as an adult? It's boring! That made it ripe for an update.

Unfortunately for almost everyone, the 2025 update just isn't good. Aside from the many, many controversies that plagued this movie from the beginning, there are a few insurmountable problems with the film itself.

First: Gal Gadot. She was compelling in the (first) "Wonder Woman," but she's quite wooden in this role, nowhere near the deliciously evil villain performances we've gotten in other live-action remakes (e.g., Cate Blanchett in "Cinderella" and Melissa McCarthy in "The Little Mermaid). Instead it's what Vulture's Jackson McHenry aptly called a "remarkable anti-performance."

Other issues include the CGI uncanny valley dwarfs (a misguided attempt to reckon with the mistreatment and fetishization of little people across decades of pop culture), confusing (and pointless) lore updates, and new songs that would've been at home in "The Greatest Showman," not paired with songs written in the '30s.

If there's one saving grace in this movie, it's its star, Rachel Zegler. As usual, she is a winning presence on screen, radiating compassion and kindness in every frame. She also has an undeniably beautiful voice, which is more than we can say for some other people who have been cast in these musicals.

11. "Peter Pan & Wendy" (2023)
a still from the 2023 live-action adaptation of peter pan

Disney+

"Peter Pan & Wendy" proves that we should probably cool it on "Peter Pan" for a while; did you even know a live-action remake of "Peter Pan" starring Jude Law as Captain Hook, Yara Shahidi as Tinker Bell, and Jim Gaffigan as Mr. Smee was released on Disney+ in 2023?

It's a pity, because this movie is relatively OK. Law is locked in as Captain Hook, and director David Lowery showcases his talent for sweeping landscapes (as seen in "The Green Knight") in his version of Neverland.

Unfortunately, though, this movie just … isn't that interesting.

"Peter Pan" as a story might be cursed β€” "Hook" is only good if you have nostalgia goggles on; 2003's "Peter Pan" was a flop; "Pan" stars a white woman, Rooney Mara, as the Native American character Tiger Lily; and this adaptation is barely remembered.

Give these characters a break, Hollywood.

10. "The Lion King" (2019)
a still from the 2019 live-action adaptation of the lion king

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

If this were a silent film, 2019's "The Lion King" would be an unparalleled achievement in special effects. But, unfortunately, it's not β€” making the characters photorealistic instead takes all the joy out of the film.

We were forced to sit through some of the most iconic musical sequences in Disney history, like "I Just Can't Wait to Be King," "Hakuna Matata," "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," and "Be Prepared," being sung by photorealistic animals who can't emote, in a relatively colorless virtual desert.

Part of the magic of animation is that you can make the animals do anything you want β€” that's why we love the 1994 original so much.

We'll always be thankful that we got BeyoncΓ©'s "The Lion King: The Gift" companion album out of this movie, but that's it. "Mufasa," the prequel that was released in 2024, wasn't anything to write home about either, even if it was slightly better.

9. "Lilo & Stitch" (2025)

"Lilo & Stitch."

Disney

Disney's latest live-action offering, "Lilo & Stitch," is a remake of the 2002 animated original β€” that makes it the newest animated film to get a live-action remake. And even though this movie is quite charming (in parts), there's an argument that we could've let another 20 years' worth of kids fall in love with the original movie, an underrated gem.

The live-action remake is fun, but it shares many of the same issues as the other remakes. The colors don't pop in the same way, and the character designs of the aliens don't translate to real life.

The biggest issue that many fans have with this movie is that the ending is completely different from the 2002 classic β€” we won't spoil it for you, but just know that the emphasis on ohana and no one getting left behind from the original is, well, undercut by the resolution the live-action movie finds.

8. "Beauty and the Beast" (2017)
a still from the 2017 live-action adaptation of the beauty and the beast

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

"Beauty and the Beast," released in 2017, was the first of Disney's new wave of live-action remakes. As a result, it was graded on a curve at the time and made $1.2 billion, per Box Office Mojo.

But if you go back and watch this movie eight years later, you might notice something: Emma Watson, for all her charm, is simply not a great singer. And Paige O'Hara, who voiced Belle in the 1991 original, has one of the clearest voices in all of Disney's history.

There are a few other issues with this movie β€” it's so long, adds unneeded backstory, switches the amazing Beast song from the Broadway adaptation ("I Can't Love Her") in favor of the boring "Evermore," the underwhelming "exclusively gay moment" β€” but our biggest problem is Belle.

7. "Aladdin" (2019)
a still from the 2019 live-action adaptation of aladdin
"Aladdin."

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

"Aladdin," released in 2019, also made $1 billion around the world. In this case, we have no qualms with Mena Massoud or Naomi Scott, who play Aladdin and Jasmine wonderfully.

Who we can't whole-heartedly support is Will Smith, who plays the Genie. Simply put, no one is competing with Robin Williams' iconic performance in the 1992 original. It's a tour-de-force, one of the best voiceover performances ever.

Smith was never going to be able to compete, and the off-putting design of his character and his rap-singing did him no favors.

Also, this movie was, for some reason, directed by Guy Ritchie. Ritchie is known for his action films, and he tried to inject as much action as he could into "Aladdin." But we'd argue this movie doesn't need it! It's a fairy tale about a street urchin falling in love with a princess!

6. "The Little Mermaid" (2023)
a still from the 2023 live-action adaption of the little mermaid

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Halle Bailey was a perfect choice for Ariel. She has an amazing voice, plays the physical comedy of voiceless Ariel well, and has great chemistry with Jonah Hauer-King, who plays Prince Eric. Melissa McCarthy also turns in a solid performance as Ursula.

What prevents this movie from being truly fun to watch is all the underwater stuff. Everything looks so fake and lifeless. The colors aren't bright enough, and we've once again run into the "Lion King"/"Lady and the Tramp" problem: Flounder, Sebastian, and Scuttle can't show any emotions on their faces. That's a shame when compared with the 1989 original, where Sebastian, especially, is hilarious in his exasperation and anxiety.

Plus, the new songs are so obviously written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (see "The Scuttlebutt") that they don't mesh well with Howard Ashman's originals.

5. "Mulan" (2020)
a still from the 2020 live-action adaptation of mulan

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

"Mulan" is the live-action remake that was released during the COVID-19 pandemic, so we'll never know how it would have fared at the box office.

But we're betting it would have done well. "Mulan" is a true action movie, which fits well with the subject matter, as Mulan secretly takes her father's place in the Chinese army.

The 1998 original film has some of the best Disney songs ("Reflection," "I'll Make a Man Out of You," "Honor to Us All"), but the remake wisely removes them, as the tonal shift from hilarious songs to gritty action would be too jarring. Instead, the songs are subtly worked into the score.

We also like the addition of Xianniang, a witch who identifies with Mulan's feelings that she doesn't belong. Mulan has no female friends at all in the original, and while these two aren't friends, there's a kinship and respect between the two.

4. "Cruella" (2021)
a still from the 2021 film cruella

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

While a prequel establishing why Cruella de Vil hates Dalmatians so much doesn't sound fun, we'd recommend watching "Cruella," since it's bolstered by the lead performances of Emma Stone and Emma Thompson.

First of all, she actually doesn't hate Dalmatians β€” she kind of likes them. Does that make sense with the character's future? Not really, but it is fun to watch Stone commit so deeply to the 1970s English punk scene.

Her on-screen nemesis, Baroness von Hellman, as played by Emma Thompson, is a campy delight.

Stone's performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination, and a sequel is in the works. We're excited.

3. "The Jungle Book" (2016)
a still from the 2016 live-action adaptation of the jungle book

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Jon Favreau directed both 2016's "The Jungle Book" and 2019's "The Lion King," but seemingly learned the wrong lessons from "The Jungle Book," which is a delight.

Mowgli, the lone human character in the film, gives viewers a face to center them as he explores a jungle filled with familiar voices, such as Bill Murray as Baloo, Ben Kingsley as Bagheera, Lupita Nyong'o as Raksha, Scarlett Johansson as Kaa, Christopher Walken as King Louie, and Idris Elba as Shere Khan.

The remake added beautiful effects and exciting action. And β€”Β spoiler alert β€”Β it also changed the ending so Mowgli could remain in the jungle with his friends.

2. "Christopher Robin" (2018)
a still from the 2018 film christopher robin

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Maybe we're cheating a little bit since 2018's "Christopher Robin" isn't a specific remake of any "Winnie the Pooh" film but instead, a semi-sequel that brings Pooh and friends out of the Hundred Acre Wood into the real world, but this movie is too good to leave out.

In it, Ewan McGregor plays a grown-up Christopher Robin who has left his friends Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Piglet, Rabbit, Kanga, Roo, and Owl behind. By chance, he reunites with them and is reminded of the important things in life.

It is always a joy to hang out with Winnie the Pooh, and a disillusioned adult returning to their fun-loving ways is a story Disney does so well, like in "Mary Poppins."

Additionally, the score for this movie rocks. It's so perfectly paired with the film.

1. "Cinderella" (2015)
a still from the 2015 live-action adaptation of cinderella
"Cinderella."

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Maybe this is because we just don't think the original "Cinderella" from 1950 is that good. Yes, "Bibbidi-Bobbidi Boo" is a banger, and the animation of Cinderella's dress turning from a ripped-up rag to a shimmering princess-worthy ball gown is beautiful, but that's really it.

The prince is barely a character, the other songs aren't that memorable, and Cinderella herself has little personality besides being sweet.

The 2015 "Cinderella" rectifies all that. Ella, as played by Lily James, is kind, funny, and has a very strong sense of right and wrong, while Prince Kit, played by a very blue-eyed Richard Madden, gets an arc and a loving relationship with his dad.

The famous blue ball gown is also one of the rare pieces of Disney iconography that looks just as beautiful in real life. We must also mention Cate Blanchett as a fully committed Lady Tremaine and Helena Bonham Carter as the dotty Fairy Godmother.

We'd go as far as to say that "Cinderella," at least for now, is the only true Disney remake worth your time.

  • President-elect Donald Trump has 11 grandchildren.
  • They range in age from a newborn to 18.
  • His second-youngest child, Tiffany Trump, just gave birth to her first baby.

A lot has changed for the Trump family since President Donald Trump first moved to the White House in 2017.

Back then, his oldest son, Donald Trump Jr., was still married to his now ex-wife, Vanessa Trump, and the president had three fewer grandchildren.

His newest grandchild, Alexander, was born on May 15, 2025, to his daughter Tiffany and son-in-law Michael Boulos.

In all, Donald Trump has five children β€” Donald Jr., Ivanka, Eric, Tiffany, and Barron β€”Β and the four eldest each have children of their own. Barron, who's 19, started his freshman year of college in 2024.

Donald Trump's eldest grandchild, Kai, is already stepping into the spotlight. She spoke at the 2024 Republican National Convention and frequently posts photos on Instagram with her grandfather β€” she even posted on X that Elon Musk had "uncle status."

Another of Trump's grandchildren, 9-year-old Theodore Kushner, sat center stage at Super Bowl LIX when his grandfather became the first president in history to attend the game.

It stands to reason that as the rest of the Trump grandchildren grow up, they may become more publicly outspoken and publicly known.

Here's a guide to all 11 of Donald Trump's grandchildren.

Kai Trump is the oldest of Donald Trump's grandchildren at 18 years old. She's also the oldest child of Donald Trump Jr. and Vanessa Trump and was born in May 2007.

Her parents, who were married from 2005 to 2018, have five children together.

Kai spoke onstage at the Republican National Convention last year, making her first foray onto the political stage, and sat on the inauguration stage in January when Trump was sworn in.

She's also set to play college golf and verbally committed to playing at the University of Miami beginning in 2026, she shared on Instagram in August 2024.

She thanked Donald Trump, who owns more than a dozen golf courses, in the post, writing, "I would like to thank my Grandpa for giving me access to great courses and tremendous support."
