The Smartest Fintech Stocks to Buy With $500 Right Now

Key Points

  • Fintech stocks are hot, as the risk-on sentiment has swept the market.

  • Upstart is thriving after updating its AI model and making some other key changes.

  • Sezzle is delivering sizzling growth thanks to a differentiated approach to BNPL.

Fintech stocks have long been volatile. The sector surged during the pandemic before crashing in the 2022 bear market. However, as digital payments continue to take share from traditional forms of payment and AI ups the stakes in fintech, sector stocks have started to rally again, benefiting from the broader risk-on sentiment since President Trump paused the Liberation Day tariffs.

Several fintech stocks have soared since then, but there are two in particular that look poised to deliver multibagging returns if you have a little bit of cash to invest. Let's take a closer look.

1. Upstart Holdings

Upstart (NASDAQ: UPST) was a fintech darling of the pandemic era as the stock posted triple-digit growth and delivered double-digit profit margins. However, when interest rates rose, demand for loans from its platform dried up, profits disappeared, and the stock was forgotten.

Since then, Upstart has improved its technology with better models that have led to higher conversion rates. It has strengthened its capital with new funding sources and streamlined its business, and now expects to be profitable again this year.

In addition to those improvements, Upstart is starting to tap into massive loan markets in auto and home as it continues to roll out those offerings in new states. As a result, the business is stronger than ever, though that's not reflected in its stock price. While Upstart stock has gained in recent weeks, the stock is still down roughly 80% from its peak in 2021, and its market cap is just $7 billion.

For a company chasing a massive addressable market and trying to disrupt traditional FICO scores, Upstart has the potential to be much larger than a $7 billion company, especially if interest rates fall again, stimulating loan demand. Even at current interest rates, the business is thriving. In the first quarter, revenue rose 67% to $213 million as fee revenue climbed 34% to $185 million.

Transaction volume doubled to 240,706, showing the benefit of its new, more advanced Model 18. If Upstart can maintain its momentum, the upside potential from here is considerable.

2. Sezzle

Like Upstart, Buy now, pay later (BNPL) companies also had a moment during the pandemic, soaring as demand for the new kind of payment took off before interest in the sector faded in the 2022 bear market.

However, BNPL hasn't gone away, and one of the fastest-growing companies in the space is now Sezzle (NASDAQ: SEZL), a BNPL that initially went public in Australia and has grown its business with a different strategy from most of its competitors. Instead of focusing on the merchant, Sezzle has prioritized the consumer, growing its business through subscription programs, rewards, and new product features like auto-couponing, which automatically finds coupons for customers as they shop.

That strategy seems to be resonating as Sezzle's growth rate has accelerated into the triple digits.

In its first quarter, the company reported revenue growth of 123% to $104.9 million as gross merchandise volume (GMV) rose 64.1% to $808.7 million.

Sezzle's profit margins have also soared alongside that growth as the company reported an operating margin of nearly 50%, showing the business model is highly scalable. The company has also managed its credit risk successfully, and cuts customers off from the product if they miss a payment.

Investors are valuing the stock like its growth story is coming to an end, but BNPL is also a massive addressable market, competing with credit cards, so there's plenty of runway for the company to grow.

At a market cap of $4.5 billion, the stock could easily be a multibagger from here, even as it's already up more than 800% over the past year.

Why Sezzle Stock Soared a Sizzling 107% in May

Shares of Sezzle (NASDAQ: SEZL) were sizzling in May. They skyrocketed an eye-popping 106.7% for the month, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence. The primary driver was the digital payment platform's strong first-quarter results.

Sizzling growth

Sezzle reported strong financial results across the board in May. The buy now, pay later (BNPL) company's gross merchandise volume (GMV) jumped 64.1% to $808.7 million. That helped fuel a 123.3% increase in revenue, which reached a new quarterly high of $104.9 million. That represented 13% of its GMV, up from 11.5% in the fourth quarter. The company benefited from higher user engagement and its WebBank partnership.

Meanwhile, the company's transaction costs declined from 4.3% to 3.8% of GMV. Driving the improvement were better-than-expected credit performance, effective payment processing strategies, and reduced interest costs from the improved terms of its new credit facility.

The combination of surging revenue and improving margins enabled the company to more than quadruple its net income to $36.2 million, or 34.5% of its revenue. The continued growth in profitability enabled Sezzle to produce $58.8 million in cash flow from operations, up from $38.6 million in the fourth quarter. That boosted the company's cash position to $120.9 million against $70.8 million of outstanding principal on its $150 million credit facility.

The company's strong showing gave it the confidence to raise its 2025 guidance. It now sees revenue growing 60% to 65% this year, up from its prior view of 25% to 30%. It also raised its net income outlook to $120 million for the year.

Sezzle also continues to launch innovative products to enhance its ability to serve consumers and merchants. It's beta testing its Pay-in-5 offering to provide borrowers greater flexibility at checkout. It also launched several enhanced shopping tools and expanded its merchant network.

Does Sezzle still have room to run after May's epic rally?

Shares of Sezzle have been scorching hot over the past year, rocketing over 800%. That has driven up its valuation. The fintech stock now trades at nearly 15 times sales and over 40 times its forward P/E ratio. That's definitely a premium valuation. The S&P 500 currently trades at 22.5 times forward earnings, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq-100 index fetches more than 28 times its forward earnings.

However, Sezzle is growing much faster than the average company. That could continue for quite a while, given the company's massive total addressable market opportunity. Sezzle currently controls less than 1% of North America's total BNPL market ($257 billion), which is only 2% of North America's total commerce transaction value. Because of that, it's a compelling BNPL stock if you want to capitalize on this massive growth opportunity. While the stock might cool down after its scorching rally, it could have a lot more room to run in the long term as Sezzle continues expanding.

Why Sezzle Stock Was Sizzling Today

Shares of Sezzle (NASDAQ: SEZL) were on fire today as the buy-now, pay-later (BNPL) platform delivered strong results in its first quarter and raised its guidance.

The quarter is the latest evidence of strong momentum in the business, and the stock was up 51% as of 1:24 p.m. ET.

Sezzle soars

The fintech company said that gross merchandise volume (GMV), or spend on the platform, jumped 64.1% to $808.7 million, with customer purchase frequency up to 6.1 times in the quarter from 4.5 in the quarter a year ago.

That drove revenue up a whopping 123.3% to $104.9 million, which crushed estimates at $64.8 million.

The company had 658,000 users in the quarter, and delivered strong results on the bottom line as well. Operating income jumped 260.6% to $49.9 million, giving it an operating margin of 47.6%. Generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) earnings per share jumped from $0.22 to $1.00, which was miles ahead of the consensus at $0.32.

CEO Charlie Youakim said, "Our investments in innovation and consumer experience drove new highs in engagement and performance in the first quarter. Stronger consumer activity and better-than-expected repayment trends propelled quarterly earnings above our expectations. These positive developments give us the confidence to raise our 2025 net income guidance by nearly 50% to $120 million."

What's next for Sezzle?

Sezzle is clearly gaining market share rapidly in the fragmented BNPL space, and has some key differences from other BNPLs, including that it gives users the option to choose whether their data is reported to credit bureaus, meaning it appeals to users who don't want to risk hurting their credit scores.

The model appears to be resonating, given the skyrocketing growth, and management raised its guidance as well, calling for total revenue growth for the year of 60%-65%, up from 25%-30%. It expects earnings per share to reach $3.25, up from a previous level of $2.21.

Based on that forecast, Sezzle still looks very reasonably valued at a price-to-earnings ratio of just 25. The stock could easily move higher from here if its rapid growth continues.
