How to cancel subscriptions on iPhone

16 May 2025 at 11:00

Managing subscriptions directly from your iPhone is one of the simplest ways to prevent unwanted charges and keep track of active services. Whether you're looking to cancel a streaming platform, cloud storage plan or any other recurring charge that you signed up for through Apple, doing so only takes a few steps.

If you download an app from the App Store, you may find the app unlocks additional features through a subscription. It’s easy to manage your subscription and app directly through your iPhone, allowing you to keep an eye on what you’re paying out. Some apps might tempt you with a free trial, so if you don’t want to pay a monthly subscription fee or you’ve had enough of your subscription, you can cancel or renew on your iPhone. Here’s how to find and cancel your subscriptions on iPhone.

How to cancel a subscription using your iPhone

Apple allows you to manage and cancel App Store subscriptions pretty easily. Subscriptions tied to your Apple ID include services such as Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, iCloud+ and third-party offerings purchased through the App Store.

To cancel a subscription:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.

  2. Tap your Apple ID name at the top of the screen.

  3. Select Subscriptions.

  4. Scroll through your list of active subscriptions.

  5. Tap the subscription you want to cancel.

  6. Tap Cancel Subscription, then confirm.

If the subscription is already marked as “Canceled” or shows an expiration date, no further action is needed.

Keep in mind that when you cancel a subscription, it typically remains active until the end of the current billing cycle(since you’ve already paid for it). You won’t be charged again, but you’ll still be able to use the service until the subscription officially ends.

How to cancel a subscription through the App Store

In addition to the Settings app, you can also access subscription details from within the App Store.

  1. Open the App Store.

  2. Tap your profile icon in the upper-right corner.

  3. Tap Subscriptions.

  4. Select the subscription you want to cancel.

  5. Tap Cancel Subscription and follow the confirmation prompts.

This method leads to the same subscription menu found in the Settings app, so it’s simply a different way to get there. Both approaches work equally well, as they require the same number of taps.

What to do if you don’t see the subscription listed

If a subscription you want to cancel isn’t listed in the Subscriptions section, it may not be billed through Apple. Some services, such as Spotify, Netflix or Hulu, often require you to manage your subscription directly through their website or billing provider.

To check if a subscription is handled outside of Apple:

  • Look at or search for the confirmation emails you received when signing up.

  • Check your bank or credit card statement for the company name.

  • Open the app and look under its account or settings section for billing info.

If the subscription isn’t associated with your Apple ID, canceling it will require visiting the provider’s website or app, or contacting its customer support directly.

How to cancel Apple One

If you’re subscribed to Apple One, which bundles several Apple services into one plan, you can cancel the entire bundle or individual services to stop using them.

To cancel Apple One:

  1. Go to Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions.

  2. Tap Apple One.

  3. Tap Cancel Apple One to remove the bundle.

  4. If you only want to cancel one service within the bundle, tap Choose Individual Services and turn off the specific one you no longer want.

Canceling Apple One may remove access to multiple services, including Apple Music, iCloud+, and Apple Arcade, depending on your plan.

How to cancel a free trial

If you signed up for a free trial, be sure to cancel before the trial period ends to avoid charges. Apple will begin billing you automatically once the trial converts to a paid subscription.

Free trials follow the same cancellation process:

  1. Go to Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions.

  2. Select the trial you want to cancel.

  3. Tap Cancel Subscription.

The trial will end immediately if canceled, and you may lose access to premium features.

How to resubscribe after canceling

If you change your mind and want to restart a canceled subscription, you can do so from the same Subscriptions menu, as long as the service is still available.

  1. Open Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions.

  2. Scroll down to the Inactive section.

  3. Tap the service you want to reactivate.

  4. Select a plan and confirm your payment method.

Your subscription will resume under the current terms, and the billing cycle starts from the date you resubscribe.

To downgrade or cancel iCloud+:

  1. Go to Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > Manage Storage or iCloud Storage.

  2. Tap Change Storage Plan > Downgrade Options.

  3. Sign in if prompted.

  4. Select the Free 5GB plan to cancel your paid plan.

Changes take effect at the end of your current billing period.

How to check for hidden or expired subscriptions

To view old subscriptions:

  1. Go to Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions.

  2. Scroll to the Inactive or Expired section at the bottom of the screen.

These entries can’t be canceled again and are listed for reference only. If a subscription you no longer use is listed under “Active,” it’s still billing and needs to be manually canceled.

More tips for subscription management

  • Use reminders: Set calendar reminders to review subscriptions before trials or renewals occur.

  • Review billing statements: Check your monthly charges for unexpected renewals.

  • Enable purchase sharing: If you're in a Family Sharing group, know that some subscriptions can be shared or managed by the organizer.

  • Consider using Apple’s Report a Problem page if you were charged for a subscription you didn’t authorize: reportaproblem.apple.com

  • If a subscription doesn’t have a cancel option or is listed as “renewing soon,” you may not be able to cancel it from the iPhone directly. In this case:

  • Double-check for another Apple ID you may have used to subscribe.

  • Try restarting your iPhone and checking the Subscriptions list again.

  • If it’s an Apple service like iCloud+ and the cancel button isn’t visible, you may need to change your iCloud storage plan instead.

How to cancel your Netflix subscription

6 May 2025 at 20:22

If you’re suffering from Netflix fatigue and are looking to cancel your subscription, the process is relatively simple. In fact, depending on how you initially signed up for the service, you’ll typically be able to end your membership in just a few steps. It’s also worth noting that Netflix allows you to downgrade or upgrade your plan if you want to keep your account but pay less. This guide covers how to cancel Netflix, how to switch your plan and what to know before doing either.

How to cancel your Netflix subscription

Netflix offers a fairly straightforward cancellation process, but the steps to do so vary slightly depending on how you’re subscribed. If you signed up directly through Netflix, you can cancel via the website or mobile app. However, if you subscribed through a third-party service such as Apple, Google or your cable provider, the process may be slightly different.

Cancel Netflix via the web

If you signed up through Netflix.com, these are the steps for canceling your subscription from a desktop or mobile browser:

  1. Go to Netflix.com and sign in.

  2. Tap your profile icon in the top-right corner and select Account from the dropdown menu.

  3. On the Account page, locate the Membership & Billing section.

  4. Click the Cancel Membership button.

  5. You’ll be taken to a confirmation page. Click Finish Cancellation to complete the process.

After cancellation, your account will remain active until the end of your current billing cycle. Netflix will store your viewing history and preferences for 10 months in case you decide to return.

How to cancel Netflix via the app

You can also cancel your membership using the Netflix app on Android or iOS (the steps for both are the same):

  1. Open the Netflix app and tap your profile icon in the top-right corner.

  2. Select Account from the dropdown menu — this will open a browser window.

  3. From there, follow the same steps listed in the section above to cancel via the web.

The mobile app simply redirects to the browser-based account page, so the process remains largely the same.

How to cancel Netflix through a third-party service

If you’re billed through a third party, such as Apple, Google, Amazon or a TV provider, the steps will be different. You’ll need to cancel through that provider’s billing system.

To find out who handles your billing:

  1. Go to your Netflix Account page.

  2. Look under Membership & Billing. If you see a message like “Billed through Apple,” you’ll need to cancel through that service.

Here’s how to cancel through some of the most common third-party providers:

Apple (iPhone/iPad)

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.

  2. Tap your name at the top, then tap Subscriptions.

  3. Find Netflix in the list and tap it.

  4. Tap Cancel Subscription.

Google Play

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.

  2. Tap your profile icon in the top-right, then select Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions.

  3. Choose Netflix, then tap Cancel subscription.

Amazon

  1. Go to Amazon's Memberships & Subscriptions page.

  2. Find Netflix in your list of subscriptions.

  3. Click Manage Subscription, then select Cancel Channel or Cancel Subscription.

Cable or mobile provider

If you added Netflix through your cable package (such as Comcast/Xfinity, Verizon or T-Mobile), you’ll need to cancel via their app, website or customer support. Each provider has its own cancellation process, so check your account or contact their customer service for assistance.

What happens after you cancel

Once you cancel, your Netflix account will remain active until your current billing period ends. You won’t be charged again unless you restart your membership. Netflix retains your profile information, viewing history, My List and settings for 10 months after cancellation. So if you resume your service within that time, you can pick up right where you left off.

If you’re on the Netflix DVD plan (only available in the US), you’ll need to cancel it separately from your streaming subscription. You can do this under the DVD Plan section on your Account page.

How to change your Netflix plan

Instead of canceling completely, you may prefer to switch to a more affordable subscription tier. Netflix offers several plans, each with different features and price points. As of early 2025, the available plans in the US are:

  • Standard with ads ($7.99/month): 1080p resolution, ad-supported content, watch on two devices at a time

  • Standard ($17.99/month): 1080p, ad-free, two simultaneous streams, option to add extra members

  • Premium ($24.99/month): 4K UHD + HDR, four simultaneous streams, supports spatial audio and more download devices

Here’s how to change your plan:

  1. Go to Netflix.com and sign in.

  2. Hover over your profile icon and select Account.

  3. Under Plan Details, click Change Plan.

  4. Select your desired plan and click Continue.

  5. Confirm the change.

Plan changes take effect immediately. If you upgrade, you’ll be charged a prorated amount for the remainder of your billing period. If you downgrade, the change will apply at the start of your next billing cycle.

How to delete your Netflix account entirely

If you're looking for a clean break from Netflix altogether, you can completely delete your account. Doing so will take slightly more time and involves going to your email, so have your inbox open.

1. Go to the Security section of your account and select Delete Account

2. Complete the security check.

3. Select Permanently Delete from the available options. An email will then be sent to you to confirm your selection.

Additional things to consider

Before canceling or changing your Netflix subscription, keep the following in mind:

  • Shared accounts: If you’re part of someone else’s Netflix plan as an extra member, you won’t be able to cancel the entire subscription (the account holder would need to be the one to do this) — but you can remove yourself from the shared access.

  • Download content: Any downloaded content will become inaccessible once your subscription ends.

  • Account reactivation: You can restart your membership at any time by signing in and clicking Restart Membership from your Account page.

  • Billing dates: Your account page will show your exact billing date. Cancel before this date to avoid being charged for another month.

FAQs

Can I pause my Netflix subscription?

Yes, Netflix allows you to pause your membership, but only for one month. During this time, you can still watch your favorite content until the end of the current billing period. You will not be charged for the next billing period, and will be unable to access content while the pause is in effect.

At the end of your one-month pause, your membership will automatically resume and you will be charged for the next period. You can choose to “Pause for a month” via the “Cancel Membership” option in your Netflix account settings, and can repeat the process two more times (for a total pause period of three months at a time). However, if you prefer to take a longer break from the service, you may be better off cancelling your membership instead.

Will I get a refund if I cancel early?

No, Netflix does not offer partial refunds. You’ll retain access until the end of your billing cycle instead.

What if I don't see the Cancel button?

If there’s no Cancel Membership button on your account page, you’re likely being billed through a third party. In that case, follow the provider’s cancellation process.

How to use the Apple Passwords app

12 April 2025 at 12:00

Apple’s new Passwords app (introduced with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia) is a big leap forward in making password management simple and user-friendly for Apple users, even if it's not as robust as other password managers. If you’ve ever fumbled through Safari settings to find a saved login or toggled through iCloud Keychain menus to edit credentials, the Passwords app is for you. It’s designed to give you a dedicated home for all your saved login credentials, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords and two-factor authentication codes, all in one secure, easy-to-navigate interface.

What is the Apple Passwords app?

The Passwords app is Apple’s standalone password manager. While Apple users have long been able to save passwords using iCloud Keychain, the actual management experience was buried within Settings or Safari. With the Passwords app, Apple has turned what was once a tucked-away feature into a full-fledged application that works across iPhone, iPad and Mac.

The app holds all your saved login credentials, plus passkeys, verification codes and Wi-Fi passwords. Everything is securely stored, synced via iCloud and protected by Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode. With it, you can more easily search for logins, get security recommendations, share credentials with family members and store two-factor authentication codes all in one place.

How to use the Apple Passwords app
Rob Webb for Engadget

How to access the Passwords app on iPhone

To access the Passwords app on your iPhone:

  1. Make sure your device is updated to iOS 18 or later.

  2. Find the Passwords app using Spotlight Search, the App Library or your Home Screen.

  3. Tap the app icon and authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID or your device passcode.

Once you've opened the app, you'll see your saved accounts organized alphabetically. A search bar at the top makes it easy to find what you're looking for. Logins are grouped by category, including:

  • Passkeys (passwordless login credentials)

  • Codes (verification codes for methods like two-factor authentication)

  • Wi-Fi

  • Security (compromised or reused passwords)

Tapping any item shows detailed information, including login URLs, usernames, passwords and any associated notes.

How to add and edit passwords manually

Most passwords are saved automatically when you use Safari to log in to websites, but you can also add entries manually, including verification codes and passkeys. To manually add a login:

  1. Open the Passwords app.

  2. Tap the + icon in the bottom-right corner.

  3. Choose New Password.

  4. Enter the site or service name, username and password.

  5. Add any optional notes using the Notes field.

  6. Tap Save to finish.

To edit a saved password:

  1. Open the relevant entry.

  2. Tap Edit.

  3. Update any details as needed.

  4. Select Set up code (if required), where you will be prompted to enter a setup key or scan a QR code with the camera.

  5. Tap Save to save your changes.

How to enable and use Autofill with the Passwords app

Autofill makes logging in fast and seamless. Instead of typing out usernames and passwords, your iPhone can automatically suggest saved credentials when you visit a login page.

To enable Autofill:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Passwords.

  2. View Autofill Settings.

  3. Make sure Autofill Passwords and Passkeys are turned on.

  4. Choose Passwords as your default autofill provider.

Once Autofill is enabled, Safari and many third-party apps will offer login suggestions from the Passwords app when you tap into a username or password field. If there are multiple logins for a site, you’ll be prompted to select the right one.

When creating a new login in Safari, you’ll also be asked to save the new password to the Passwords app. This ensures it’s available across all your Apple devices.

How to sync passwords to your devices with iCloud Keychain

The Passwords app uses iCloud Keychain to sync your saved credentials across your Apple devices. If you use multiple devices like an iPhone, iPad and Mac, enabling Keychain ensures your logins stay consistent everywhere. To enable iCloud Keychain:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Tap your Apple ID at the top of the screen.

  3. Tap iCloud > Passwords and Keychain.

  4. Turn on Sync this iPhone (or iPad).

You may be prompted to authenticate or confirm your identity with a verification code. Once it’s set up, all your saved credentials will be securely synced via iCloud. This also allows the Passwords app to work in harmony with macOS and iPadOS, meaning you can view and edit your saved data from any of your Apple devices.

How to use the Apple Passwords app
Rob Webb for Engadget

How to use passkeys and verification codes

The Passwords app supports two newer authentication features that improve both security and convenience: passkeys and verification codes.

Passkeys

Passkeys are a new way to sign in without using a traditional password. Instead, they use Face ID, Touch ID or a device passcode to confirm your identity. They are intended to be more phishing-resistant since they can’t be reused or copied across services.

If a website or app supports passkeys, Safari will prompt you to create one when signing in or registering. Once saved, the passkey is stored in the Passwords app.

To view and manage passkeys:

  1. Open the Passwords app.

  2. Tap Passkeys.

  3. You’ll see a Passkey section if one has been saved.

Passkeys work across Apple devices and can even be used on non-Apple platforms by scanning a QR code when prompted.

Verification codes

Verification codes are used in two-factor authentication (2FA) systems. The Passwords app can now generate these codes automatically.

To set up a verification code:

  1. Open the Passwords app.

  2. Tap the login entry you want to edit.

  3. Tap Edit > Set Up Code.

  4. Scan a QR code provided by the website, or enter the code manually.

The app will generate a six-digit code that refreshes every 30 seconds. The code will also autofill when you log into a compatible website or app, saving you the hassle of switching to a separate authenticator app.

How to share passwords securely

You can share saved credentials with others using iMessage. This is helpful for families or teams who need access to shared accounts. The passwords are sent via end-to-end encrypted messages, ensuring privacy and security. To share a password:

  1. Open the Passwords app.

  2. Tap the entry you want to share.

  3. Tap the Share button (a square with an arrow).

  4. Choose a recipient in Messages.

How to check for weak or compromised passwords

Apple includes built-in security checks for your saved credentials.

To view security recommendations:

  1. Open the Passwords app.

  2. Tap Security.

You’ll see a list of passwords that are:

  • Reused across multiple accounts

  • Easily guessable

  • Involved in known data breaches

You can tap any entry to update the password directly. This feature helps improve your overall security hygiene with minimal effort.

How secure is the Passwords app?

Apple uses end-to-end encryption for everything in the Passwords app. That means your data is encrypted on your device and can only be decrypted by your device. Even Apple doesn’t have access to your credentials.

Accessing the app requires authentication via Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode. And if someone steals your device, your saved passwords remain locked behind biometric security.

Additionally, Apple participates in the FIDO Alliance, promoting secure, passwordless logins and helping drive adoption of technologies like passkeys.

Using the Passwords app on iPad and Mac

The Passwords app is also available on:

  • iPad tablets running iPadOS 18 or later

  • Mac laptops and desktops running macOS Sequoia or later

On iPad, the app works the same way as on iPhone, offering full management of your saved credentials. On Mac, you can find Passwords in System Settings or by using Spotlight Search.

Syncing is handled automatically through iCloud Keychain. If you're logged into the same Apple ID on all your devices, your passwords will stay in sync.

How to customize your iPhone’s home screen in iOS 18

5 April 2025 at 12:01

The official launch of Apple’s iOS 18 brought with it some fresh ways to customize your iPhone’s home screen. Rather than leaving unwanted apps hanging around like a bad smell in places you don’t want them, users can now take full control of app placement and make their home screen their own. Whether you're looking to add useful widgets, reorganize your apps or get rid of the ones you never use, customizing your iPhone home screen can help your device feel a little more unique. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to everything you can do to make your iOS 18 home screen look better and work the way you want.

How to add, edit and remove widgets

Widgets provide a convenient at-a-glance view of an app’s data or functionality, giving you quick access to information and reducing the need to open the app itself. A well-placed widget allows you to check the weather, view your calendar or access music controls, all without opening an app, giving your thumb a well-earned rest. Everybody loves a good shortcut, and with iOS 18, you can add, edit, or remove widgets easily, letting you jump straight to the information that matters.

To add a widget:

  1. Touch and hold an empty area on your home screen until the app icons start to jiggle.

  2. Tap the Edit button in the top-left corner and select Add Widget.

  3. Scroll or search for the widget you want, then tap it.

  4. Swipe left or right to choose a size (some offer different layouts).

  5. Tap Add Widget to place it on your screen.

  6. Drag it to your preferred spot, then tap Done (top right).

To edit a widget:

  1. Press and hold the widget you want to change.

  2. Tap Edit Widget (if available). If Edit Widget isn’t available, you can cycle through the icons for different placement and layout options.

  3. Adjust settings like what calendar it shows, which location for the weather, etc. These options will be unique to each app’s widget.

To remove a widget:

  1. Press and hold the widget.

  2. Tap Remove Widget, then confirm.

How to move apps and widgets on the home screen

Shuffling your home screen apps and widgets is also a cinch thanks to iOS 18’s customization overhaul. It’s a simple but useful way to personalize your iPhone’s home screen and declutter your wallpaper, so your loved ones' faces don’t become buried underneath a wall of app icons.

  1. Tap and hold on any app to reveal a menu.

  2. Select Edit Home Screen, where you can move the apps across pages by dragging them to the edge of the screen.

  3. Tap Done when you're finished.

You can also stack one app on top of another to automatically create a folder (more on that below).

How to customize apps and widgets on the home screen

Moving your most-used apps into prime position is all well and good, but if you’re going for a particular aesthetic with your home screen, the default appearance of an app icon can sometimes spoil the overall look. Luckily, in iOS 18, you can exert more control over how your apps look, including the option to change app icon colors and how widgets are displayed.

To customize your app icon colors:

  1. Press and hold on the home screen and tap Edit at the top.

  2. Choose Customize to change background colors (like dark, light or a custom color) or apply a different layout.

However, bear in mind that not all app icons can change color. If these steps don’t work for you, you may be left with the odd rogue app icon, sticking out like a sore thumb. In which case, you can hide the app icon from view, while still being able to access it easily from the app library.

How to lock or hide an app

Security is a top priority, particularly when it comes to your smartphone. You might have certain apps you want to keep private and for your eyes only. If so, you’ll be happy to know that there are two ways in which you can prevent unwanted eyes on your apps. You can hide or lock an app behind a passcode or Face ID; this prevents unauthorized access and keeps your apps in a Hidden folder. Similarly, you can remove apps entirely from the home screen, still allowing you (and others if they have access) to view them in your App Library.

To lock an app:

  1. Long-press the icon of the app you want to lock on the home screen.

  2. Select Require Face ID (or Touch ID or Passcode).

  3. Confirm your selection by pressing Require Face ID (or Touch ID or Passcode).

To hide an app:

  1. Long-press the icon of the app you want to lock on the home screen.

  2. Select Require Face ID (or Touch ID or Passcode).

  3. Confirm your selection by pressing Require Face ID (or Touch ID or Passcode)

  4. Tap Hide and Require Face ID (or Touch ID or Passcode), then tap Hide App.

How to organize your apps in folders

Folders are a great way to declutter your home screen and keep similar apps grouped together. If you’re the type of person who likes to keep things tidy and organized, storing your apps in folders is a good way to do it.

To create a folder:

  1. Drag one app icon over another, and iOS 18 will automatically create a folder with both.

  2. Tap the name to rename the folder (e.g., “Social” or “Work”).

  3. Drag in additional apps if you want.

To remove a folder:

  1. Move all the apps out of the folder, and it will disappear once it’s empty.

How to remove or delete apps

The struggle is real when it comes to app bloat, and sometimes a bit of a spring clean is needed. If your home screen needs a bit of freshening up, you can kick a seldom-used app to the curb, or at least kick it off your home screen.

To remove an app from the home screen (without deleting it):

  1. Tap and hold the app icon.

  2. Tap Remove App.

  3. Select Remove from Home Screen.

  4. When you want to use that app, navigate to the App Library (swipe left past your last home page) or swipe down from the top of your home screen to search for it.

To delete an app completely:

  1. Tap and hold the app icon.

  2. Tap Remove App.

  3. Select Delete App, then confirm.

To re-download a deleted app:

  1. Open the App Store, search for the app and tap the download icon.

A few more tips to personalize your home screen space

Widgets Smart Stacks: Using this feature, you can combine multiple widgets into a stack you can swipe through. To do this, just drag one widget on top of another of the same size.

App Library shortcuts: If you want a cleaner home screen, you can remove most apps and rely on the App Library (swipe all the way left) or the search tool to launch what you need.

Focus mode customization: Each Focus mode can have its own custom home screen. This is a useful tool for separating your work life from your personal life.
