How to watch the funeral of Pope Francis online—and without cable

25 April 2025 at 15:46
  • Pope Francis will be laid to rest on April 26. Here’s how to watch the funeral and what to expect.

Five days after his death was announced by Vatican officials, Pope Francis will be laid to rest on April 26. Americans who wish to watch the service, however, will need to wake up early.

Memorial services for the leader of the Catholic Church have been underway since April 23, when Francis' body was laid to rest in St. Peter's Basilica, allowing visitors to pay their final respects.

Here are the details about when Pope Francis's funeral services will take place and how you can watch at home.

When is Pope Francis' funeral?

Funeral services are scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 26.

Where will Pope Francis' funeral take place?

The funeral will be held in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican.

What time will Pope Francis' funeral take place?

The ceremony will take place at 10:00 a.m. local time in Rome on April 26. For U.S. viewers, that's at 4:00 a.m. ET start.

Will Donald Trump attend Pope Francis' funeral?

Yes, President Trump has said he and First Lady Melania Trump will attend the funeral.

Who else will attend Pope Francis' funeral?

Also expected in attendance are former President Joe Biden (a devout Catholic) and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Prince William is confirmed to attend, as is British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Other dignitaries include E.U. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a longtime friend of Pope Francis.

Beyond VIPS, more than 200,000 people are expected to attend the funeral.

Where will Pope Francis be buried?

Whereas most pontiffs have been buried in the grottoes under St. Peter’s Basilica, Francis announced in 2023 that he would be buried in Rome’s Santa Maria Maggiore basilica instead. That, he said, would let him be near his favorite icon of the Madonna.

How will Pope Francis' funeral be different than other popes?

Francis avoided much of the grandeur and pageantry of the papacy—and made several changes to papal funeral rites, effectively writing a new script for his own funeral and those of popes to come. He did away with the requirement that the pope be placed on an elevated platform in St. Peter’s Basilica during the public viewing. Instead, his body and future popes has laid in state in a simple coffin. Also, he cancelled the burial tradition requiring three interlocking coffins made of oak, cypress and lead.

Archbishop Diego Ravelli, master of papal liturgical ceremonies, told Vatican News the changes highlight “even more that the Roman Pontiff’s funeral is that of a shepherd and disciple of Christ and not of a powerful man of this world.”

When will Conclave take place?

The changes Pope Francis made to papal funeral plans did not touch on conclave, the process where the Vatican convenes to elect a new leader of the church. There’s no set amount of time between the death of a pope and the start of conclave, but it’s generally held between 15-20 days after a pope’s death. That puts the date somewhere between May 6 and May 11.

Conclaves must start after the "Novemdiales" period (Latin for "nine days"), a time dedicated to mourning the pope's death, so May 5 or 6 seems a more likely start to conclave, but no formal announcement has been made.

At conclave, Cardinals under the age of 80 will select the next pope. As of Jan. 22, there were 252 cardinals worldwide—138 of which fit the age requirement. A two-thirds majority of voters is needed to win.

Can I watch Pope Francis' funeral if I don’t have a cable subscription?

Yes. Major television networks will cover the Queen’s funeral live over the air. The best way to watch any sort of network programming for free (without a cable subscription) on a big screen is with a good HD antenna. To ensure you're getting the most reliable signal, be sure to test the antenna in multiple locations in your home.

Can I stream Pope Francis' funeral live online for free?

Paramount+

CBS’s streaming service will give you a one-week free trial, followed by a $8 or $13 monthly charge. (An annual plan begins at $60.)

Jeff Bezos–backed Slate Auto unveils its $20,000 electric pickup

25 April 2025 at 15:00
  • Slate, the EV startup backed by Jeff Bezos, has come out of stealth, introducing its first electric vehicle. Pricing will start at $20,000 after tax credits.

Slate Auto, the Jeff Bezos–backed electric-vehicle company, has unveiled its first vehicle, which will sell for as low as $20,000 after the U.S. tax credit (its actual price will be $27,500). That would make it, by far, the least expensive EV available to American drivers.

“The definition of what’s affordable is broken,” said Slate CEO Chris Barman in a statement. “Slate exists to put the power back in the hands of customers who have been ignored by the auto industry. Slate is a radical truck platform so customizable that it can transform from a two-seat pickup to a five-seat SUV.”

The vehicle is priced considerably less than Tesla's Cybertruck, which starts at $82,235. It also costs less than the Ford F-150 Lightning (which starts at $62,995), the Chevy Silverado EV ($87,300), GMC’s Hummer EV ($98,845), and the Rivian R1T ($69,900).

While inexpensive, the pickup doesn't have many features American buyers are used to being standard in vehicles, such as a stereo, paint jobs, power windows, or touchscreens. (The vehicles do have air conditioning included, though, as well as federally mandated features, such as automatic emergency braking and a backup camera (which shows on the dash).

The vehicle also has only a 150-mile range, making it more suited for errands around town than a long trip.

Features can be added to the vehicle, of course, for an extra charge, including the one that converts it into an SUV. More than 100 accessories are available, including wraps and decals, running boards, power windows, and a spare-tire carrier. Many of those are designed to be user-installed.

Reservations for the vehicles are being taken now for $50.

The Trump Organization is now selling ‘Trump 2028’ hats

25 April 2025 at 14:27
  • The Trump Organization has begun selling hats with "Trump 2028" emblazoned on them. That's raising talk, once more, about whether Trump will attempt to run for a third term. While Constitutionally forbidden, he has previously expressed interest in doing so, but has recently said he plans to serve this term "and then I'm gonna leave."

Donald Trump is once again raising talk of a third term as the Trump Organization's online store has begun selling "Trump 2028" merchandise.

The company has begun promoting the $50 hat on social media and Eric Trump posted a picture of himself wearing one on his Instagram story.

"Rewrite the rules with the Trump 2028 high crown hat," the product listing reads.

The product could easily be a troll for Trump's opponents. Eric Trump's Instagram post also seemed to mock the media questions that came after the hat's release.

Constitutionally, of course, Donald Trump cannot be elected to a third term as president. He has, however, talked about it repeatedly. Just 69 days into his second term. Trump told Meet the Press host Kristen Welker that “a lot of people" wanted him to serve a third term, adding he was “not joking” about the idea.

The 22nd Amendment of the Constitution sets a two-term limit for presidents, clearly stating “no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.” And while some have floated the idea of Trump running as a vice presidential candidate under Vance or someone else, who would resign upon taking office, the 12th Amendment states “no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of president shall be eligible to that of vice-president of the United States.”

Despite all of that, Trump told Welker "there are methods" for him getting a third term. He seemed to back away from that stance in an interview with Time this week, however, saying " I'm going to serve one term, I'm gonna do a great job. … And then I'm gonna leave."

The season will begin on Thursday, September 4 (with the Philadelphia Eagles hosting a yet-unannounced opponent), and conclude on February 8, 2026 with Super Bowl 60.

Tickets will go on sale after each game is announced.

A pair of tuition-free schools started by Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan will close this year, and it’s not clear why

24 April 2025 at 15:19
  • A pair of tuition-free schools started by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative will close at the end of this school year. The Primary School, which operates both locations, did not give a reason for the closure. Mark Zuckerberg has become increasingly close with Donald Trump, who has cracked down on DEI programs in schools and government.

In 2016, the foundation started by Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, launched a pair of tuition-free schools—one elementary, one middle—for low-income students.

At the end of the school year, both will close—and the reasons are unclear.

“This was a very difficult decision, and we are committed to ensuring a thoughtful and supportive transition for students and families over the next year,” the Primary School said in a statement on its website.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, a nonprofit established by the billionaire couple, said it will invest $50 million over the next five years in East Palo Alto, Belle Haven, and the East Bay to help families navigate the transition, with a focus on education savings accounts, early childhood programs, and family engagement services.

“We have been deeply humbled by the support of so many during our journey. Our community and partners have made a lasting impact on children and families, and helped us demonstrate what is possible when we think and operate differently,” Jean-Claude Brizard, chair of the Primary School board, said in a statement.

The majority of the school’s 443 students are Latino and receive special education or health services, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

In 2015, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative was founded following the birth of the couple’s first son. At the time, the two pledged to give away 99% of the value of their Facebook stock. In recent months, though, Zuckerberg has grown increasingly close to Donald Trump, who has cracked down on DEI programs in both the government and at several U.S. universities.

The Primary School, meanwhile, has prioritized diversity efforts, even establishing a DEI task force in 2020.
